Might head out and camp on the beach this weekend and hate to not take my dog with me. Problem is, the last few day trips I've taken he gets torn up by flies and I know the mosquitoes are worse than the flies at night. Neighbor said spray some off on my hands and wipe him down. Now this may work most places, but our mosquitoes laugh at OFF around here. Anyone else have any ideas or suggestions?
was just at a dog show where a handler found a tick on her skirt.
My guys get heartworm and Advantix b/c we travel to support our BIS buddy, and bordatella b/c they interact w/other dogs.
Our show buddy's solution to skeeters is Mosquito sticks, which we rig up high out of dog reach. No need to light 'em, the repellent keeps NM skeeters away w/out ignition. Got one bite in 4 nites... appear to have a 15-30' diameter of effectiveness.
Don't let yr dog interact w/the skeeter stick tho: badness. They aren't even stored inside the show rig, so as to keep puppies and badness from that collision.
Good call on the bordatella, kennel cough is rarely life threatening but it sucks to have a dog coughing constantly and absolutely nothing you can do for them.

Can't say much for flies and mosquitoes, my border collies have some pretty thick fuzz to 'em, so flying bugs haven't been a problem, but ticks are a concern. Right now, deer are migrating, shedding ticks onto the scrub brush and trees, so I would apply fresh Frontline the day before taking them out to the coast.
I'd definitely recommend following Sirenmoses' advice, he seems to be the most experienced around with dogs and camping.
The Summer Shine and Herb Garden are said to be the most effective here in the Midwest in repelling bugs from your dog. The wife and I have cats, so have no personal experience with use of these (my few experiences with bathing cats have been rough on both parties), but my kin use and swear by these.
In this case, I obviously have a connection to the sellers, but have no financial interest in their company. Thought I'd throw it out there as one more potential solution. In my personal experience, using herbal products works for some places, but some bugs may enjoy the dose of natural repellent that works against them elsewhere. YMMV
Try Skeeter Skeddaler out of Maine. Smells like cinnamon. Works on people or pets. We spray a little on our chair edges too, keeps em away while we are sitting.
