hi. i am thinking of importing a '78 fj-45. i know there is the 30 year smog exemption. so i looked on the DMV website and it states that vehicles 1976 and newer require smog certification. but elsewhere, there's a bulletin, which is here http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vehindustry/vin_memos/vin2002/02vin13.pdf

and it states that effective january 1, 2003, there is a rolling smog exemption. applying their formula, you take the current year minus 29 to determine when the smog exemption applies.

thus, 2008 minus 29 equals 1979. it would seem (unless i misunderstood or miscalculated something) that a 1978 vehicle will be smog exempt.

can anyone provide any thoughts? i know there's other threads about registration, but i'm not sure if this issue has been brought up before. i apologize if it has.

thanks.

Mondo,

It appears the bastards changed their mind once again about the 30-year rolling exemptions. They repealed the law allowing 30-year exemptions, and this little change was added to a different piece of legislation--typical. Check to see if this is correct: Beginning April 1, 2005, the 30-year rolling exemption has been repealed. Instead, vehicles 1975 model-year and older will be exempt.

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear.

thanks, bear. not what i wanted to hear. hot dang those bastards!!! is this a california thing only? if not, maybe registering in another state might be an option. crap :mad:

It truly does suck! What of the people who were waiting patiently for the 30-year mark to come up, and then find their plans to import something washed up.

Perhaps the only solution to this is time. Eventually the little legislative jerks will move on to something else, some other place to meddle or show they care about the environment.

With so very few really old, classic, and antique vehicles out there, their owners should be honored for restoring, upkeeping, and maintaining a piece of our past. All the pollution put out by all the classic vehicles in this country, doesn't even come close to the atmospheric damage done by just the dairy cows throughout America, or one coal-fired power plant.

Somebody needs to help these people put things into their proper perspective, find another target.

That's how I see it anyways.

i was one of those victims!! i had hoped for the 30 years rule to kick in, and what i got is a kick in the groin.
i'm wondering if the same rule applies to diesels. if i can register it without the hassle of smog equipment, i'll see how to convert it.
but first i must get rid of my jeep and bug.
cheers.
