Distributor/Coil change?

Currently running a non-USA distributor with a Pertronix unit and the old coil with the external ceramic resistor. Really, *really* want to change to the late model (60 series) electronic distributor and coil. Would this be a straight swap or would I need additional modifications? I know I might have to change the side cover on the engine to clear the big dizzy, and I've already sourced one. What else?

Any particular year that would be a better swap? If I can't find them used, I may buy them new, these are the only two items needed to get my Land Cruiser back on the road.

need the coil/ignitor and dizzy from a 8/80+ fj40/60

Might there be a chance your side plate is already the correct one?

I have no issue with the used set up I used when I did my swap, paid $80 for the used parts.

Oh......your prolly gonna need matching plug wires(and coil wire) i think the non US ends are smaller and wont work. i got new cap/rotor

other than that its very easy and well worthwhile swap, prolly the single best thing I did to my 45(77 2f)

if changing side plate, get new cork gasket. that took me longer than anything else, getting the old cork off the block, buy a gasket scraper.

the ignitor will have 2 green plugs, one is for the tach, other is the main power(and just take whatever wire that goes to your coil now and hook it up to green plug........thats it.

You "might" have one extra wire coming off the starter to the coil(on non us) that you will leave off when changing over, its not needed with the elec stuff.

But again............easy and well worth doing.

Just an FYI, I ran a large cap FJ60 distributor in my 79 for a while and it fit fine with the stock side cover. It was close, but it didn't touch.

Thanks, guys! Would there be a significant difference between an FJ60 coil and dizzy and an FJ62 coil and dizzy? I ask because I already have access to the later, although the dizzy has a lot of miles and might be suspect (I'll have to check tolerances).

Also, the ignitor is not necessary. A MSD type ignition can replace it. '

62 dizzy will not work the advance is computer controlled, the 60 is vacuume and mechanical.
I suspect the coil/ignitor will work from a 62.
