best thing you can do is get the brackets.... JTO didnt originate those brackets... but somone in this forum did :)... anyway if you like I can draw out the brackets and mail the design to you... or just get a set of brackets made... then buy the rest of the stuff at your local parts stores and get warranties on all the stuff.

im not a big fan of JTO.....

Lou, are you talking front or rear?

The front is easy, just find a '76 or newer '40 or '55 front axle or any Toyota mini truck solid axle and swap all the parts over.

It gets more complicated in the rear.

Don't forget, if there is no disc brakes on the truck now you WILL need to make modifications to the brake lines and add boosters and other stuff.

C-G and Mini..thanks for the input...........it is a 74 pig....... drums all around and they are total crap...was thinking that the effort to rebuild would be better to go disks in front........would be very happy just to change the fronts to disks; the JTO solution seemed simple to my unknowing mind; they only show a braket, calipers, disks and line; .......booster, no mention on their site about a booster BUT makes sense to use one to decrease pedal pressure;

Not just to make it easier on you. Drum brakes are "self assisting". The rotating wheel tends to make the brakes hold, that's why they have return springs. Disc brakes need the booster so that you can actually stop the vehicle in a reasonable length of time.

Try it out one day in a vehicle with disc brakes. At the top of an incline with NOTHING at the bottom (in case you don't get stopped in time) shut off the engine, pump the brakes to blow off the vaccum assist (you'll feel the pedal getting harder and not going down as far) and then let it coast without the engine running. You'll be surprised at how crappy the brakes seem.

On the front axle go with the mini-truck parts or a later model '55/'40 axle. That gives you OEM parts availability and is as good as anything offered aftermarket. You can't go into the local parts store and get pads when you as for them from JTO's disc brake swap kit! I did the mini truck swap on my '67 FJ45LV.

which mini truck axle do you recommend?

Lou

ANY from a Toyota solid axle pickup or 4Runner. You need everything except the axle housing.

You will need to swap the inner axles from your drum to the new disc (knock off the birfields and swap them). Mini truck inner axles are a different length. Depending on the year of your '55 you should have compatible inner axles.

I'm in the middle of putting 81' FJ40 disc brakes up front right now. JTO is highly overpriced and very rude if you are trying to order... additionally, their knowledge is limited, so don't take what they tell you as gospel. I got an FJ40 axle for 250 bucks hub to hub... much cheaper than JTO's kit.
