Thats the word that Im getting is that its just carbon build up. I guess Ill find out.
It cleans up pretty nicely with that B12 carb and choke cleaner. I really dig that stuff.
The cylinder walls still have the hone marks, so I guess thats a good sign.

Have the valve seals checked before you run that thing. Shouldn't be that much carbon in only 2 cylinders. That much oil, could mean that the motor was sitting on it's side for awhile or maybe they screwed up a seal or two or an intake leak, or ......

An engine that new shouldn't have that much carbon unless there was an issue somewhere.

Looks like crappy gas and low load driving to me.

The PO and I both used either chevron/shell type fuel in my Lexus. The valve guide seals were allowing oil past them, so I would get a puff of blue smoke on start up and it would "use" a little oil because of that. It had no leaks. When the HG went, I pulled the head off (103K miles) and there was almost no carbon buildup. There was carbon build up, but nothing like what your pictures are showing. There was just a thin film on the combustion chamber areas.

Also, I would point out that it is not a case of Toyota doing it right and GM doing it poorly, the injection system on the 1fze is fairly slow and dumb. The gm controls on the LSx motors are way ahead of what toyota was doing in the 90's.

Use the good stuff when it comes to gas and don't be afraid to bury your foot in the motor once in a while (Ok, I do it all of the time.:grinpimp:).

Thanks Jack!
I had asked about how to prevent that kind of build up when I de eventually run it.
I started cleaning a bit, and it looks a lot worse than it is when I got into is. Its kinda peeled up which gives it the thicker appearance.
Off to Steves loop...
