Direct messages - what does this mean for space?

I’m noticing that thus % bar is increasing in my inbox (now at 98%) and I’m not sure if this represents the total space I’m allowed for attachments or just the space all messages is taking up, but I know I’m going to need to reduce at one point. I searched all FAQs and not seeing what this represents. Thanks for any insight.

Mentioned in the user guide:
"There are 3 horizontal lines next to the forum logo (upper left) - this opens the mobile menu. Click your Avatar (upper right) to edit your preferences. The Envelope next to that is your Direct Message Inbox. LEAVE Direct Message is the action needed should you find your inbox full. "Forums" is how you access the main home Tech pages, or by clicking the IH8MUD logo in the menubar."
