Ok, I'm not to knowledgable with engines let alone diesel. Could this work in my 80? would it bolt in or is there a lot of fabbing involved? Would it be worth it since gas prices are insane now? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330109845505

...or would this one be any better?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyota-Land-Cruiser-Hi-Lux-2-4-Liter-2L-TE-2L-TE-Diesel_W0QQitemZ330110463516QQihZ014QQcategoryZ33615QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Any info is greatly appreciated. Any suggestions would be nice too.

That diesel is too small for your 80. 1HD-FT/E is the way to go if you want a Toyota diesel. Some 80's have a cummings 4BT. Do some searching....lots of info on this subject.

If I go with a cummins or anything other than toyota, I'm guessing wiring is going to be a pain. If I get a 1HD-FE/T engine is it any easier. A friend told me it should just be a plug and play.

e_parise- check the "80s with alternative engines" thread for lots of discussion (is this in the FAQ?) Try search if not. The cummins 4bt is nice because there's virtually no engine electronics to worry about. check http://proffittscruisers.com for more info.

Wiring a 4BT cummins into a 80 is much easier than a factory Toyota diesel

"plug and play"... if only that were only so

Sheldon at G&S Cruisers www.gscruiserparts.com did the 1HD-T swap in his 80 and the wiring was a lot of work. Turned out amazing and drove better then the OEM gas engine, best diesel swap into a 80 I have seen.

I hear down in australia they do lots of gm 6.2/6.5 diesel swaps..... which is probably one of the cheapest diesels to find for sale, but it seems like it would increase weight way to much for on the trail action. Anyone here have one with this swap or have driven one. A diesel swap is in my future and i'm leaning more toward 4bt.

On a side note my friend swears he ran into a guy with a v-dub diesel swapped in that had been boosted to 390lbs anyone heard of this??

Plus get ready for a $10,000 bill for a decent complete 1HD-FE/T and harness!

I'm def. aware of the cost. But I think it'd be good investment somewhere down the road.

I had a Hilux Surf with 1KZ-TE, they are prone to overheating problems with a poorly designed cooling system in the head. The 2.4 ltr Surf engine has the same issue only worse. It would be an absolute slug in an 80 series and probably get very poor fuel economy (small engine Vs big truck).

There's not that many 80's in Australia with the 6.5ltr diesel as 1HD-T are plentiful and less than half the price. I wouldn't have to take my shoes and socks off to count them all.

If I were doing the swap I'd be looking at the older 1HZ and 1HD-T pre Oct 1993. Both these engines are purely mechanical, no ECU to wire in. You will need to get all of the glow plug "stuff" however.

If you find a 1HZ you can Ti it with a Garrett Turbo and Safari intercooler. You can't run high boost pressures in the 1HZ as the pistons will melt. 8psi max.

You also need to be aware that the fuel in a diesel is not delivered to the fuel pump on the engine under pressure so you have to mod the fuel tank to remove the fuel pump in that or install a diesel fuel tank.

If economy is what you're after have you done everything you can to make the truck as economical as possible? Extractors, high quality spark plugs, port matching inlet and exhaust manifolds, 3" free flowing exhaust system, piggy back ECU (UNICHIP (look it up on the web))

The cost of doing the engine swap (possibly as much as $8000-$10000 US) will take forever to make it cost neutral. Plus you then have an orphan engine that has little tech support in the US, particularly from Toyota in the US.

Food for thought. Good luck.
