I just bought an '82 300D wagon and remembered this thread as I'm also looking for a diesel for my 40.
On the issue of the auto tranny. Go to mercedeshop.com. There is a writeup there on the swap of a manual into a auto car. For the purposes of a cruiser swap the 4sp manual trans from a 240D is a bolt up to the 5 cylinder diesel in the 300D. You can use the flywheel from the 240D.
