Desmog 92 FJ80 HUGE MPG increase.

Is there something similar to this for FZJ80s also?.....cause my MPG along with probably 99% of all the other owners gas mileage SUCKS!

there is, but you won't see much, if any, MPG improvements.

I just tucked a BB in the vac line to the EGR actuator so it can't. my '80 is a feb '93 built non CA emissions, no egr temp sensor from the factory, you get the idea. I need to get a bypass hose so the hot air is not still in the pipe next to the harness still.

I desmoged my 92 this weekend following the steps above. Took all of 15 minutes to do and totally reverseable. The engine now runs so much smoother. My idle went up about 100 rpm's, which the ecu may adjust with time. Havevn't been able to check mileage yet, but I have my fingers crossed. One question, can this mod mess with the temp sensor or the cooling system in anyway? My temp gauge always runs at 1/2 scale. After doing this my temp gauge now runs at 1/3 scale? Don't really see how they could be related? Or maybe totally unrelated and I need to replace my thermostat.

This is the guide I followed:

Seriously, once I started it was incredibly straightforward. You can effectively disable the EGR by unhooking the vacuum and exhaust pipe. I also left the air injection manifold in place and simply capped the input pipe. Note that you want to make sure the vacuum line is still connected to your fuel pressure regulator, see here:

That is the route I plan on taking. None of this BB stuff, just remove it and place it in a baggy in the garage (for whatever reason). It appears the process is a bit more detailed than just BBs either. I plan on ripping out the smog pump, those lines and what not. Ended up tracing all the vacuum lines around and there are some more sensors (?) near the intake cooler fan on the fender well. Anyone have much thought on removal of those?

Bump. I'll probably get around to doing this later in the week.

Any way to bypass/disable the air pump without having to purchase the belt?

I suppose it can just sit there, but would be pointless. Unless its is electronically engaged to spin, then you dont want to break anything. Would just be a temp thing in my mind. I think I will do this after I finish my ammo box build, and make the blank covers for it this weekend. Should have more time free with by son visiting his mom for two weeks. Hate to say it like that, especially since his little two year old hands are helpful in the engine bay. But you know what I mean.

What does the air pump even do? Could I just like plug up the pipes leading out of it?

I just performed the BB approach to blocking the lines, and looped the two together; I am impressed so far by the power increase, especially since I am now able to accelerate - going UPHILL.

I will start my own thread on all of the specifics.

Thanks for the writeup!

I was changing the thermostat when I ran across this thread and decided to do the de-smog. now, if I only had some antifreeze, back to the store I go..

oh, btw, that belt works, it is hard to find, but it works. Does anyone have the proper size to include the altenator in the grouping? I'm not comfortable with the single run on the alt pulley..

torque increase is evident for sure. acceleration at freeway speeds (stock gears with 33"s) is increased.
the sound from the exhaust is way noticeable. I'll be checking the fuel economy..

You can also just disconnect and cap the pipes going into the smog pump if you don't want to deal with the hassle of belts. I capped mine with quarters and electrical tape. Works like a charm.

If I understand correctly, this would be a little more difficult to 'undo' for state emissions inspections correct?

Not for me. I HATE changing belts. This way it's pull-the-tape-and-plug-them-back-in. Takes all of 3 minutes.

I failed to mention I use the clamps already on the pipes to hold the tape on and lashed the pipes to another hose to keep them from flopping into the fan or something.

I did the BB thing, plus pulled my smog pump and all the associated hoses and bits yesterday. My smog system must have been in really good shape because it ran great before, and it runs just as good now. I might be able to detect a tiny increase in power, but that's not what I was looking for. I really like that opening that was left after the pump was removed. There's been a york quietly laying in a bucket in the shop for the last year and a half, I think it's finally found a home. I just fueled up yesterday so I'll run a tank of gas through it to make sure I don't get any codes and to check my economy before I finish welding up my york bracket.

I'm consistently seeing 14 mpg, up from less than 10. The truck is also running much better, I suspect there were some other issues with the smog vacuum setup that I've now bypassed..

Anyone with a update on MPG and 1FZ done this?

Disabling the EGR on a 1FZ actually hurts the performance.

Monteburns' 94 had EGR troubles, the thing wouldn't work at all. He said his rig ran terrible until he jammed the EGR on all the time somehow. Now he says it's way smoother and gets better mpg.

Has anyone tried this with a CA Smog FE80?

I would do just the EGR part so it could be easily undone before you take it in for testing. Those Cali inspections are ridiculous.
