thinking of making a quick-release fuel can bracket/mounting system.
I have a flat surface available for mounting, and have been thinking of something like this:

fuelCANmount.jpg

looking at the bottom of the can, you will notice a thicker tab...
This tab slides into the rear opening on the base, which has a narrow side (left).

The idea is that once the can is moved towards the left, the rear slot narrows and takes care of the back...a pad-lock takes care of the front.

to remove can, remove lock and slide towards the right and lift.

any ideas/comments would be appreciated...

When fuel isn't a concern, a similar bracket can be designed to accommodate a cooler...
think modular :D

How does the hold down piece fit through the handle of the can if it has two bent down sides?

I did a similar project last fall, although mine is only designed to quick release the can - and it's not finished yet!! (I will be able to lock my can onto the mount with a padlock)

Can't seem to find my pictures of it right now... have to look around on my computer....

I was thinking it could be fed through before adding horizontal brackets.
I like the simple design, but am not crazy about the bracket becoming a part of the can...

What do you guys think of this one?
Not as secure, but I'm not too concerned with locking the can in place, as I don't normally have it on the truck when not needed.

Why not go right over the top of the whole can? Can't come out that way...

Still leaning towards the 2nd design.
The two hoops should keep the can secure, and will prob. store easier then the 1st.

Don't be shy...as 2badfjs said, break out those crayons :D

I think this is it :D
Once the curved-end is in, the straight bar comes down and can be locked in place...

are the old style jerery can holders no longer available?

i have one that the hold down goes thru/under the handle and hooks on each side of the base.

pretty simple and it locks
want to see a pic?

Why not a simple"bucket" or "basket" for the can(s) to sit in. You can either make a cross bar to hold it in, or simply run a bungie cord over the top. I've got a dual carrier on the back of my orimary use '40. Each holds 4 cans. More often than not I don't do anything to secure them in the basket. If things get really really bumpy, I just string a bungie over them. If I don't need that much fuel, I can put a cooler in one basket and four cans in the other. Or folding chairs, tool boxes, snatch straps or whatever if I don't want to put a cooler there.

Mark...
