Anyone have any opinions and or experience with this hardware software package from Delorme? Offered on the web from Delorme at $149.95 plus shipping. The laptop I would be using is a Dell Inspiron 6000. Thanks.

Sorry no input here either.... we run a Baja540c.. wanted to give you crap too :D

Haha, thanks guys no worries.:flipoff2: I just figured I'd throw it out there.

Dave the 540 is a great unit, too rich for my blood for now.

My Dell Inspiron 6000 has a great screen so I was looking into using it as a PC and GPS. $150 seems like a good deal? Take care guys! Thanks for the help, not!!!! :D

I have one of the older Delorme Topos and use the LT-20.

The software was free and the LT-20 was $20.

The PN-40 is a more versatile piece and can be bought for a similar price.

Scott, I ran national geographic topo software on the Mojave Road trip on a tablet pc. You have more than enough power in the laptop to run that. The NG Topo! California was $99, plus a puck from GlobalSat for $40. Doesnt do city driving too well (streets are so close together), but it kicked butt on the Mojave Road last weekend. Just another option... .02

Thanks guys. Based on the reviews I've read so far I think I'm going to pull the trigger. I'll let you know how it works out.

$150 for software and the GPS antenna w/connections to the PC? Sounds like a great deal. One of the Norcal gang a couple of years ago had a topo software on his PC and it rocked! Couldn't tell you what it was tho!

Buy it and let us know. I've owned the Garmin offroad info (2 cd's that cover Nat'l and I think state park offroad maps) for over a year and still haven't loaded any of it up on my Streetpilot for use!

Sorry, meant to say the PN-20 package. And I do not recommend the LT-40 package.

A handheld or portable unit is much more convienient and faster. It sucks having to boot up, start Topo, and then acquire a fix.

Hey Brad thanks for posting on the Topo! app. I sent an email off to them to see if it would work with my Garmin USB receiver and never heard back from them. How did you like the software? Is it possible to get the tracks and or way points for the Mojave Road trip ?

If anyone is interested I have an almost new (looks and works just like new) Garmin GPS 35 (http://i00.twenga.com/p/03/38/140338vb.png) if someone would want to trade for a copy of National Geographic's Topo! California.....

Well I went ahead and picked up a brand new LT-20 and 08 Street Atlas for $30.00

mkfour- As far as portables being faster can you elaborate please. If you are correct I guess I'll have to get the laptop open and all programs running 15 minutes before we hit the trail. I will have the receiver roof mounted which would seem a better location than a portable inside the cabin? I also like the size of the screen on my laptop (13"), can use email, watch movies on it, download pictures if you fill your card, etc.

There is a reason to own both Topo 7 and Street Atlas. Topo 7.0 does not cover Mexico or Canada. I visit Baja several times a year and will find it very useful. What sucks is the fact that Delorme does not offer NOAA charts of Mexico that work with Topo. You have to buy the Professional version in order to make it all work properly. Oh well.

Thanks again for the insight. :)

Its good. Lots of detail, handwritten notes, springs, mines, petroglyphs, etc etc. Its not easy to manipulate the program while driving, but I just set up the automatic tracking while driving and make all my notes, points of interest, etc while stopped.

Unfortunately for me, I was still learning how to use it best and I have unnecessary waypoints all over the route. Oh well, next time will be much better.

I have a file with all kinds of waypoint on it that I got from someone before I went. I'll send that one to you. PM me your e-mail and I'll shoot it off.

Brad
