Looking to start a rebuild while the current engine is still working. Current engine starting to use oil...no drips so it is being consumed but doesn't really smoke. Either the rings or the valve seals are suspect.

So what is a core engine going for? A friend has a 93 pickup that is worn out and he is thinking of calling the junk yard..what to offer for the engine?

Edit: I'm going to do a compression test and see if the rings are in the 160 range. If so, suspect would be the valve seals, I guess.

Thanks!

That's a good question. I'm sure it depends on where you live. Here in town they are on craigslist all the time. Rebuilt head and blocks go for around $750-1100 depending on how desperate they are. They got them on the pallet ready to go. I don't know what the shipping would be to Texas. But Vegas is a good road trip. Take one home.

I'm afraid that if I went to Vegas, it would cost me a LOT more!!:p

Are you looking for one to rebuild or one already rebuilt? If you want one to rebuild, ie pulling the one in your friends truck for a rebuild, most blocks go for $100 or so, maybe more if it is in exceptional shape. Heads are a wild card. If it is coming off the same block and you know the history, maybe $40-$50.

As far as built motors, they range across the board. 22reperformance has a good reputation and their prices seem reasonable. And unlike most shops, I don't think they punch them out to a one size fits all build.

Thanks, Jynx!

That's what I was looking for...a core price.
