The 60 did great. You just can't get in a hurry on the highway with it. 4.88 gears and 33" tires = 60MPH @3200RPM
But for the most part we aren't in to big a rush to get anywhere. OTOH the gears were great on the trail. I just need to do the 2WD low mode to the shift gate so I can steer that &%@&%@ auto locker front end.
Joanne has taken quite a shine to the 60 after this trip.
The H55 isn't going to give me any more power on hills so I really don't see it as a solution by itself, you would also need to do a V8 conversion for it to make sense.Sounds like it is time for a H55 conversion and detroit removal. I'm thinking you could sell the front third and build another with an ARB and gears for minimal cash outlay. Better yet, work out a swap with Keith for one of his thirds, pull the lunchbox locker out of it, install the ARB. He gets a stronger diff and you get what you want and neither have to switch/buy gears. Of course it is easy for me to spend your money...

I did some quick calculations and think a V8 swap with the AA Ranger OD would be a better value than the H55 with V8.
If we assume the V8 swap then the cost of an H55 ($1895 rebuilt from Man it aint free) plus adapters ($380 from AA) will be more than the Ranger ($1500) which acts as an overdrive and conversion between the V8 bell housing and Toyota Transmission. Plus it will let you split any gear, so it effectively doubles the number of gears in high and low range.
Not that I've ever given such a costly project any thought mind you.![]()

UMMMM, Jack! ARB and "minimal cash outlay" do NOT belong ANYWHERE near each other in ANY statement.
Aint that the truth.
I also pretty sure the phrase "I got a great deal on ........" always precedes the massive outlay of cash.
