Davis Lake off limits?

Apparently Davis Lake, being a Provincial Park, is and always has been off limits. From a thread on BC4x4, there was police at the "entrance" just off the FSR handing out warnings.

I knew it was a provincial park and off limits. Something new must be happening for them to suddenly want to enforce rules because they never did anything for years.

Idiot syndrome I suspect. Take a group of hikers and a one or more idiots on motorized vehicles making a lot of noise and a mess ensures a call to the government and then a call to police or CO. However, I am sure it could be just as easily spun the other way if a disabled outdoor enthusiast were to complain that closure to motor vehicles discriminates against disabled people who have little or no access to back country parks such as Davis Lake.

This past Sunday saw enforcement of the non-motorized restrictions of the provincial park at Davis Lake. This park comprises 192 hectares, mainly Davis Lake, and has been a non-motorized area since the park was established in the 60's. BC Parks has long term plans of investing in this park but currently lacks funding so we won't be seeing any activity for the forseeable future. However, we expect to see sporadic enforcement of motorized vehicles in the area.

What does this mean? Well, on Sunday it was warnings of big fines and vehicle seizures. In the future it may well be big fines and vehicle seizures.

The issues that bring enforcement are trail building, tree cutting, driving in creeks, firearms and garbage. All of these things initiate complaints and complaints initiate enforcement.

We were at Davis Sunday too.

we ran across a flipped quad that the rider did a bang up job splitting his face apart. Idiot stunting, no helmet. Air ambulance landed in little Iraq and took him away. Police on scene checked our group briefly, looking for license plate expiry and drivers licenses.

That, more than anything else may have been the stimulus for checking on motorized activities.
