'D' illumination out in instrumen panel

Hi. Just bought a 1993 LC with 248k and am in the process of fixing some stuff in the dash. I noticed that when I put it in drive, the 'D' is not illuminated in the instrament panel. It goes in drive just fine, the light just seems out. All of the other gears in the instrument panel light up (R, N, etc) when engaged. Is there a light for each gear or is this a relay. Should I just start out by taking the dash a part? Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

definitely try the dash smack technique. It worked for me on a few other illumination problems in the radio and other switches but not yet for the D. I'm gonna keep asmackin' tho
