Well as I posted earlier in the year I had a major set back with the FJ40 due to engine problems.

Well last weekend we made a quick trip (2400 miles in 70 hours) to Arizona and purchased another diesel engine for the FJ40.

Well today we got the beast installed into the frame. Still a lot of work to be done, won't make Flat Nasty this year, but still holding out hope for next year.

The drivetrain is almost completed. I have to get the driveshafts made yet and it will be finished. I need to get the tub secured so that I can finish up the rest of build. Exhaust, hydroboost braking/powersteering, radiator, seats, heater, wiring, etc..

When I started this project I didn't know much about Perkins diesels either, but I am learning quickly, and they actually are pretty simple. This one also has a turbo on it which makes me pretty excited. The original that I started with was a 4-236, 90 hp, non-turboed. The one I went to AZ and got is actually a 4-243, 119-122 hp with turbo. Same block as the 4-236, but bored bigger. Which made all previous fabrication swap over easily. In it's former life it was an engine for a generator.

The secret to swapping in the diesel was the adaptors, as seen in the photo below.

These adaptors allow you to take an SAE bellhousing and connect it to a Ford or Chrysler transmission. They have a few Chevy options, but not many. I am currently using a Chrysler TF727, and had my brother switch out tail shafts and housing so I could use a Dana 300 twin stick.

It has been a long road to this point, but still a long ways to go yet. I will keey ya'll updated as progress moves forward (hopefully).

Thanks for the intrest in my little project, and to Sherpa for his invaluable information.

More progress

I got some more work done on the FJ40 this week. I got the front clip assembled. It will have to come back a part for some final tweeks, but this was a preliminary run. It's not blue its PURPLE !!!! The camera made the color look funny.
