Hey guys, so back last winter we flew down to South Africa and picked up a 1987 Hilux, it had been dunked in the ocean by the previous owner and was pretty rough (read rust holes in the floor boards) but we did the whole roof tent and drawer overlanding build yada yada yada. Then we drove it about 10,000 miles. Namibia is becoming a pretty big overlanding hotspot, we didn't realize ourselves until we got there and drove by the rental depots filled with hundreds of white new gen hilux's with roof tents (you can also rent landcruisers or really whatever you want).
But most of those rigs have GPS trackers and you're sort of watched and limited by what you can do and where you can go. The whole thing about us buying the truck was that it actually cost less for the amount of time we were there then it is to rent... It is a big PIA to buy anything in southwest africa but possible... If you jump through some hoops. But then you also don't get tracked and you don't have to follow all their rules. Anyways, just wanted to say it's worth traveling to that region, especially if you want to run into some zebras and giraffes and other game while you're off road.
