Ok I'm officially out of ideas on how to make my factory tachometer work with LC's crane cams ignition kit for the 22r. I'm using the MSD Tach adapter 8920 which is supposedly the right one. I've got it wired to the instructions. I've pulled power from different sources to try and yield different results but still it does not work right.

DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE ANY IDEAS OR EXPERIENCE/FEEDBACK?????

I've called LCE, MSD, and Crane cams..... No one knows....

Please help!!
Thanks!

Yeah, I had a summit box with same adaptor. Tach worked at idle but stopped on acceleration. I wired it to factory modulator as trigger. I got tired of it and removed. How do you have it wired?

I have mine as voltage trigger ( I'm pretty sure, I'll check ) I wired it to that spec because the instructions said if my tach was originally negative signal from coil that's what I am supposed to do. It works sometimes but gets interference when I used my wipers, turn signals, headlights, blower fan, ect, ect

I've since removed my box. I considered going back to dlx cluster with aftermarket tach but not a Coleen low profile configuration. Another was to wire straight off distributor to coil but then no back up if failure in high country. Well I also hate ideal of cutting stock wiring.

My tach worked at idle and decel but stopped on accel and stopped sometimes when warm. Ignition worked always but tach was iffy.

If I can source distro plug I'm gonna give it a try running that way. But will need to figure out tach.

I've got to wonder if this is worth all of the trouble? Is the engine tweaked to a near hand-grenade HP level? If not, I'm doubting that you're going to see much if any difference.

Yes it's a retarded buy. Realized that a long time ago. I've advised everyone not to buy one. But I have it and am just trying to make do. Also if I can figure the issue out I can hopefully save the next guy a lot of headache. But hey, thanks for your input.

Not familiar with the box in question, is it a multiple spark type of ignition unit w/o a tach output wire/terminal? Given your hair-pulling I'm guessing so. How can it be triggered? Can points drive it? If so I'd use the OE module and connect it's coil neg wire to the box's points input terminal or wire. Tag the tach trigger wire to the same connection.

It's a crane cams 6440 series multi spark box with coil. It does have a tac output but needs an adapter to convert the signal from analog to digital or something along those lines. My tac sorta works sometimes but gets a lot of interference. If I unplug the alt. it works beautifully. Or if in the morning the volt meter hasn't quite spiked yet it works good too. Responds well to any type of resistance too, headlights, A/C, blower fan. Hoping that some electrical guru out there can make some sense of it.

Hook it up like on page 4 here: http://www.cranecams.com/uploads/instructions/9000-6000c(1).pdf At the junction of the former coil negative wire and the HI-6's white (points) wire also connect the tach wire.

As an aside, it sounds like the diodes in your alt may be going bad. That's the usual source of AC noise in a vehicle.

I'm gonna replace my alt soon so that may help but if I'm understanding you, I should connect the white points wire, and tac wire together? I'm not sure about the original coil neg wire though. Everything got deleted with this kit. But I was noticing that they have a ballast resistor in a lot of the diagrams. I wonder if I need some type of resistor in my circuit somewhere. I say this because each time I turn on a power draw somewhere ( resisting power ) the tac works. Thoughts?

I ran my summit box with stock igniter as trigger. Used a MSD tach converter but still had symptoms you described with my tach.
