Well I have been following threads for about a year now and just recently made an account so I figured I would throw my current build on here. I picked up a 2004 GX 470 back in February of 2021 for 4k.

Right after taking it home I started the teardown to change the timing belt and everything that came off also got replaced. I spent the next 6 months just enjoying the best SUV as my daily back and forth to work before she got her first real taste of being off-road.

A few of my friends wanted to take a trip so I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to break it in. We hit every trail at Nemo Tunnel in TN.

It crushed everything that I threw at it with no issues, even on highway tires. I followed a pathfinder on 35s and a Jeep on 33s everywhere. After this I knew I was falling into the modified trap. So I immediately started the hunt for 35s.

I found an almost new set of Falken Wildpeak 35x12.5x17 for only $300 on marketplace!

Now the GX is waiting for wheels and a lift and I am so excited for this journey.

What a steal at $4k. It’s gonna cost a lot more than that to upgrade, maintain, and repair!

A few months ago I replaced the fuel sending unit in the GX. This fixed my issue that I was having with inaccurate readings of the gas that I had left in my tank. During my trips to the gas station right after I purchased the GX I was consistently filling up about 15 gallons. I knew this seemed too small for a SUV of this size so I did some digging and found that the tank is around 23 gallons. After some research I found that the fuel sending unit was more than likely the culprit. After ordering a new one, dropping the fuel tank, and swapping the old for the new the problem was fixed. However, it seems like the issue has returned. Has anyone else had any issues with this? Why would the fuel sending unit go bad so quickly?

I rarely fill more than 18 gallons. I reach 18 only when the empty light goes on and the distance to go no longer displays any miles.

I normally put 17 when empty but light hasn’t come on. I just live with it
