Good news. Repair is done and back on the road. Even passed CA smog test. The head was actually cracked and the gasket blown so I am surprised it even ran. Thanks to the member on here who sold me the 3fe head, I came in at around $1000. Included valve job, milled head, new radiator, new belts, all gaskets (thanks cdan). Fairly easy but VERY time consuming. I did the whole project without help, just the FSM. That iron head is a S.O.B. to lift off and on while being careful not to drop it. In response to re torquing the head bolts, if you think the gasket is bad get a cheap Harbor Freight leakdown tester. This was the only way I became 100% sure what the true problem was. Try to get a real diagnosis before throwing money and time at it like I did. Don't try to avoid the real problem which in my case was the worst case. You may be lucky....
