Is it possible to haul anything with the tailgate down? This is really niche, but my wife wants to be able to haul things home from the auction house if she happens to get something. Rarely would they be bigger than 6 feet, but she was keen on a Suburban for hauling capability, both kids and random stuff. Seeing as it's going to be my vehicle I am not keen on a Suburban. Heck.. I could get a trailer if I needed to.
This is my solution. I have a 10x6 Mission aluminum trailer with a wood floor and 24" sides for the times I need it, and I drive the land cruiser without for the of the rest of the time (the vast majority of the time). It is lower and has a ramp, so it is easy to load, it is larger than a pickup bed, and has a massive capacity.

I have 3 kids from 12 to 20. Went from a Tahoe to a 2016 LC for reliability. It is family trip vehicle, DD, and tow vehicle for a boat. I love the LC. You can fit them all, and you can fit a bookcase with the seats folded up, but it’s smaller in every way vs the Tahoe. We considered a new Sequoia but with oldest at college we really didn’t need a vehicle that big anymore.

You can definitely make the LC work but I think the Sequoia would be more practical for you. It’s not a LC but it has a great 4WD system, and has MUCH more room than a LC, a much better 3rd row, and much more storage. I would get 2018+ with the Sequoia. I was looking at aftermarket stereo with a bigger screen for backup camera vs the tiny screen that comes standard. You can get aftermarket 360 degree cameras like the 200 if you want to pay for it.

We will use the off road capability. This is not a full time kid hauler, usually my wife has everyone just fine in her 2018 Accord. This would be my primary vehicle and the vehicle we use when everyone is together. I hate reliability issues so that's another reason I'd shy away from the Suburban or Expedition.

I also have to confess that I just really want a Land Cruiser that I can own for 10+ years.

I may get flamed on here but we used to have an accord. I do not know the exact comparative dimensions, but I'll tell you this - back to back riding - the accord always felt like it had much more room in the back seat (all occupied) than what the LC felt like it had in its middle row. I don't know if its the head room OR the hip angle, but the LC I feel does have a bit of a "cramped as in more acute" angle at the hip for its middle row occupants. Its not as "arm-chair" comfortable as say a suburban / yukon will be. BUt i'm 40 and kids are a lot more flexible than us so it may not matter. BUt , this is just my take on your middle row comfort/space question. Third row in the LC I feel is pretty much useless for a tall kid due to almost no floor room with knees riding in your chest kinda thing. But I maybe biased because the third row in my wife's LR4 is pretty darned awesome with chair like sitting that has proven comfortable over 3-4 hour drives for all adults including our parents.

But for what you want it for - your main vehicle with occasional family use and the need for off-road capability - the LC is pretty darned perfect. I still can't get over how comfortable the driver's seat felt during my 30 minute test drive. not to digress - but I have a thing for gauge clusters and the LC analogue gauge cluster for some reason appeals to me no end.

The Land Cruiser has a decent back seat, and the second row can move forward and back a bit. If I had 3 tall kids, I'd likely get a Tundra instead. My Crewmax was monstrous in the back in width and length. My friend that is 6'7" told me it is the only back seat he has fit in as an adult. They do ok off road too depending on what type of terrain you like to go on. I had armor (bumper, skids, sliders) on mine and it never let me down. The back seat in our Tundra was almost too big, my wife couldn't reach back to hand our daughter things.

We have 2 kids (won't be tall) and 2 black labs, and the Land Cruiser fits us better (and fits in my garage), and we throw on a roof box for long trips.

We do three across the middle row, no issues but all in boosters. Like all vehicles, seat belt extensions on the plug end is helpful to make independent buckling easier. On road trips we move one to the back and they usually fight over that seat, so we rotate.

Be like Nike...JDI!

All in boosters? Wow!

I it would be fine for around town and short trips, but you wont be happy for long road trips. We have 2 kids and a golden retriever. If we are going very far for very long it takes a full length roof box and a hitch carrier of some sort (bike rack, basket). We have friends with 3 kids and they went to the suburban as they didnt like the Sequoia interior. Either way, i think you will be happier with either one of those than a LC if you plan on taking many long road trips.

For the record i am a total land cruiser whore and think they are the best thing on the road, if your family has 4 people or less......I just picked up my 4th one on covid-19 clearance....
