The testing by which the gear lubes were evaluated was done in accordance
with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) procedures, Society
of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J306 requirements and Federal Test Method
Standards. Other than the oxidation filter patch procedure, performance
testing was conducted by an independent laboratory. Physical-property
testing (viscosity, viscosity index, pour point and foaming after
oxidation) was conducted in-house. A notarized affidavit certifying that
the results are accurately reported is included in Appendix A. Gear lube
pricing was obtained from the manufacturers or distributors, and a
notarized affidavit certifying that those prices are reported as obtained
is included in Appendix B.

Good read. I was disappointed to see that Appendix 3 did not include a test of a worse-performing oil. I can only conclude that all the oils may have passed that test. Granted the parameters are harsh, except for the timeframe- 24 hours of endurance doesn't impress me all that much.

Holy cow, Amsoil came in first, in a test that was performed by Amsoil.


Seriously though, it appears to be a pretty good test, and I am not surprised by the results. Look at Mobil 1, it did very well, available everywhere, and cheaper.

What I got out of it was that Mobil 1 was a good oil. Also, I put Royal Purple gear oil in my car and now I feel like I have to flush it! haha

I'm not a big fan of royal purple, but realistically, you will not have a problem with it. When was the last time you heard of someone having a diff fail from inadequate lube? Think about how many people are running the cheapest diff lubes, and not even synthetics and not having any trouble.

Sorry! I can't buy it, although I do believe in Amsoil. I know lots of people who are also the best at what they do. Just ask them. Regular gear lube service is the most important in my book.
