Completely stock (as far as I know) '74 with an F.5 except for a 75 EGR carb (yuck) and 32.5" tall tires. I tried to climb an old logging road last Saturday and at about 8,500' elevation it just wouldn't go any further. Rev it, drop the clutch, and blegh. Is that about where these beauties run outta beans due to the altitude? It did start running pretty rich as well.

Research tuning more, but you need approximately 1 degree additional advance for every 1,000 feet. If it lost that much power you may be too retarded (technical term not an insult) currently already.. so it simply ran out as you put it. Conversely or additionally if your carb is already too rich at home altitude it may be bogging out / flooding. It doesn’t run on “beans” so your description of what happened is useless! 🤣. Research Mud with google (native search sux) and establish it is tuned correctly for home.. Also do a compression (beans) test!!

They will go much higher than that, but as has been mentioned they need more ignition timing advance and more air/less fuel at altitude. Later models have a High Altitude Compensation system that addresses both issues. Even without this, it is pretty easy to temporarily advance your timing when at altitude.

Excellent reply!!! Beans are useless. Wellsir, you obviously ain't be gots no kin in OK.
Great idea on the advance, as actually the correct advance for any engine is "as much as it can safely take". I'll definitely go down that road as it's almost the time of the year where it gets well over 100 where I live so advancing the timing to where it's safe at 100 degree weather can't help but improve its high altitude manners.

Doing a compression test is also a great idea, if for nothing else than the knowing.

Be well, kind sir!!!

Thank you so very much! Sounds like I'm on a timing trek, which is a whole pantload cheaper than an EFI conversion, fo sho!!!
I love those doors, BTW.

I was just having fun with you.. I’ve run Landcruiser’s in Colorado (lots of altitude change) since the 80’s and tuned by ear a lot, so I can often hear whether it is spark or fuel.. I think with beans it’s more of an odor!!
