Just a quick question regarding the torquing of the stake nut at the rear companion flange on my third. I am reinstalling my TC and had the drive shaft off and checked the stake nut on rear companion flange and it was loose enough to wiggle back and forth within the stake groove on the pinion. No up and down movement... just loose on the shaft. I unstaked it, (it was finger tight at best) cranked it down to about 120lbs (on my back under the rig) and restaked it. I do have a new nut on the way, but just wanted to try it. I can now rotate the pinion shaft a little and I think that movement is just the backlash (with wheels on ground). It is much tighter now and seems way better. I left it at that for the moment as I am waiting on a few parts anyway, and will change out that stake nut when the new one gets here.

Can you just retorque that stake nut without messing up bearing preload ( or put a new one on and torque it down?) To be clear, the companion flange has no play on the shaft itself and no leaks at the seal.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm new to dealing with this part. BTW stock 4:11 diff from a 72 pig.
