I've got a guy want'n to trade me a used twice Coleman Power Mate 4000 generator, for some work I'm doing on his house.

I need a generator but I'm looking for a small (quiet) Onan LP for the camper.... anyway I have no idea what this used Coleman is worth.

I'd maybe use it once or twice a year during power outages at the house, but otherwise don't have much use for it.

Thanks in advance,

I gave $100 for my Coleman Powermate 3000 at a yard sale. It'll run my refrigerator, stereo, tv, satellite, several lights, and the microwave all at once (which we discovered during the last power outtage). I was at Home Depot yesterday and they have the Coleman Powermate 5000 for $599. Just my thought, but I wouldn't allow him over $200 for it. How do you know it's only been used twice? Has he ran the carb dry to store it or left the gas in it to gunk everything up? It's not really what you want, according to what you wrote, so that's all I'd be willing to give him. HTH.

Ask, yourself this question?

What is your price of the work that you are doing for this guy? If your work is less than the price of a new unit, you may have a good deal to work with. I would do a cursory inspection, ie: check the oil level, filters if any, and check the spark plug. If you know someone in your area that knows about generators, have them take a peek at it etc. Does the unit, look like its been through the ringer, or not?

If you want a generator that will last a while, get a Honda Generator and be done with it. The Coleman and other offbrands will last a bit, but often do not have the quality to back it up.

I work for a construction equipment rental company in S Fl, and we have Honda Generators in our rental fleet, and we also sell them. There is no such thing as a bullet proof generator, but you will get what you pay for it. I personally have a Craftsman that has done me right the last couple of hurricanes in S Fl.

HTH,

Mark

THis is true. The high end generators are worth the price. I have a 1kw Yamaha that runs like a top. You can literally sit on one side of the running generator and talk to someone sitting on the other side. It's that quiet. Starts with one easy crank. Every time. Well worth the price.
