My '85 4Runner won't heat up enough to get heat on these cold mornings. The gauge just barely comes up from bottomed out. Even in the summer, it wouldn't get into normal operating range unless I was pushing it really hard when over 80-90 degrees out. I put a new thermostat in it a few months ago, just a cheap one from Autozone. Do you think that's the problem? Should I get an OEM one? Stock 22re 5 speed.TIA

I would think the thermostat is stuck open. You can check yours by putting it into water that is 195* and see what happens.

I also put in the duel stage thermostat and have not a problem in years...

if the thermostat is not the problem, flush your cooling system. Also make sure that your heater valve is open. I know that my dash switch is broken and I have to open/close the heater manually under the hood.

See if a bit of cardboard in front of the radiator brings the temp up. I have to do this with my 40 in the winter.

I'll look into getting the t-stat from Toyota, thanks.

I ordered the t-stat recommended in the FAQ. It was actually cheaper locally when I priced it from Cdan with shipping. I'll report my findings when I get it in. Thanks!

I picked up my t-stat on the way home, installed it, and now my truck runs at the right operating temperature. And I HAVE HEAT:clap:.
