Bugger! Just got a reminder that tonight is "meet the teacher night" for two of my kids. I guess I won't be able to make tonight's meeting. Rob, please pick me up one of the stickers and I'll go over to your place tomorrow to get it and pay you for it. Bill, if the family day run is still on, I would like to go provided it isn't on the two upcoming weekends I have to work: Oct 18-19 & Nov 8-9. Maybe a lower elevation run this year might be a good idea.:D

John,

I'll pick up a sticker for you. I'm at home tomorrow, I can drop it off at your place on Friday. Were you giving the new guy Paul a ride in?

Thanks Rod. I am home all day tomorrow. I need to take a day off to work on the vehicles. The new guys rig is ready today and he is having supper with family near EBI before the meeting. Too bad. It would have been a real good reason to get out of "meet the teacher" night had I not told SWMBO. :whoops:

If they have the lemon tarts and great coffee like last year, it may almost be worth going. Parent teacher interviews are usually worth the effort, but I don't think these things do much for me, my kids or the teachers - probably the brain child of some administrator.

Thanks Rob, a good accessory for any of us.

The silver windows decals have arrived: CoastalCruisers.ca
They will be at Thursday's meeting.

can someone pop one in the mail - I can reimburse at the X-mas wing-ding Thanks

I just had the parent - teacher interview, I dumped his desk on the floor. Is school a gong show these days, I am not impressed, no discipline no nothing, sorry guys just venting

Well I felt like dumping my oldest's math teach on something. Since when in the hell is 60% okay. His attitude was that if she wasn't doing sciences in univeristy - it doesn't matter as long as she passes. WTH type of attitude is that? I thought things were bad in my time. Only had time to meet with 4 teachers. Two were great and very interested, the other two seemed like they were just growing moss passing time - a solid F on my teacher grading scale. Maybe it's time to talk to the VP to feed into their evaluation. They do get evaluated like every other working "professional", I hope.

Hope the meeting went well. Now I understand what my girls were complaining about - so it was worth missing the meeting.

Glenn: I gave the decals to Rob Millson, I will contact him and ask him to mail you one.
He is pretty busy these days: up at 5:00 a.m. and off to construction job, not much time for anything, including working on Cruisers. I am going near his place on Saturday, Oct 18, on the way to the Mt. Cheam trip, so if he has not mailed one by that time, maybe I can get one for you.

Uh...Aaron, don't blame the teachers for the state of education: they don't make policy, they just take directions from the administration. Teachers would love to put some discipline into the school system, if they could. I taught for 28 years and can tell you that from experience. It's a top-down system where policy is dictated from the Ministry and Superintendents who are making decisions based on politics and political correctness. They pass it down the food chain and the teachers are in no position to change policy. As a teacher, I was often frustrated and annoyed by situations where I would report problems to admin and nothing was done to really discipline the kids. We had situations where when some admin tried to discipline a kid, the lawyer and parent would arrive at the office and threaten legal action against the school board. The admin cannot even kick a student out of the school if the student refuses to leave. Its a bad situation and getting worse. If a teacher tries to take discipline into his own hands, he is soon on the defensive needing a lawyer himself and in the hot seat.
If you dumped the teacher's desk on the floor, that may have made you feel better, but the teacher probably felt terrible. He probably went home wondering why he ever even went into education in the first place. I suggest that next time you should rant at the local MLA and/or Premier Campbell where policy is made.

Or the BCTF who seems more interested in social engineering than teaching ABC 123.

Bill, like in any work place there are always a few bad eggs who stand out because they are so lousy at what they do. Problem is that in this type of environment, it is really hard to get rid of them. Its nothing new, and I won't blame the BCTF. When I was a kid - many many moons ago - there were some great teachers but we also had a few lousy ones who only were able to continue because they were good friends with the admin or someone on the school board. Talked to my neigbour who is a math teacher and who is tutoring my daughter. He said many teachers don't give a damn as long as the students make the average - that is what they are evaluated by. Apparently the BC Min of Ed thinks 60% in math is average (AKA okay). Frankly I give Gordo and his group of bandits a grade well below average. Imagine if they had invested in the education of our kids like they invested in the Olympics with our tax dollars. Problem is there doesn't seem to be any politicians who care about excellence in their own actions or the education of our kids. BTW, Sarah got an 80% on her math test - way up from 60%. It makes me mad that we have to get a tutor so someone can take the time to actually TEACH her so she understands.

Rant out ... for now.

Yes, there were a few bad teachers around my school, over the years. I think that they just "gave up" trying after facing years and years of teaching difficulties within the system. They eventually just went with the flow and put in time until retirement. Men are now staying out of teaching because both the money and working conditions are unsatisfactory for the amount of work they do: inside and outside the classroom.
After I retired from teaching, I spent some time working for an airline at the airport. I was surprized to find that a "real job" on the airport ramp, was far, far easier than teaching. All that crap about teachers not having a "real" job, is absolutely wrong. Teaching is a difficult, stressful and sometimes thankless job and teachers deserve recognition for upholding their educational ideals.
However, most of the teachers at my school were hard working and dedicated, and I think they need recognition for keeping up the fight while the system continually grinds them down. Burnout is a common problem in teaching. How did they get that way? They didn't start out as burnouts.
As for governments, I taught during Social Credit, NDP, and Liberal administrations. In fact, altogether including my time as a student, I spent 45 years in the classroom. ALL governments have neglected the public schools and allowed the system to slowly deteriorate.

Other topic: Viair 12Volt onboard air compressor at KMS for $250.
24Volt for $270. Good deal!

Also: I'll put a meeting write-up soon on the member's thread.

Boy, the school I'm at seems like it must be teacher heaven!!

60% is a joke for an average. My boys are rarely below 80% in anything and more often is 90% or better. The teachers are glad to stay and tutor as necessary and the students for the most part are respectul. You even hear "Sir" and "Ma'am" alot!!

It probably doesn't hurt that most of us here are volunteers so we're here 'cause we want to be!

Bill , I am not blaming the teachers. Happy Thanks giving ,dont worry about it. See you at Mt Cheam.

Sooooo, was there a Coastal Cruiser club meeting last week or did eveyone just go crash the parent teacher night :flipoff2:? I hardly make it to meetings anymore but I do still like to read meeting minutes :frown:.
