Here's my perspective of the 2008 event- a great time, perfect weather, and a lot of good people wheeling their toys......those who missed it missed a great event.

We had five in our group Thursday and did greens and blues. Tom Humphries in his resurrected 40, Chris Breton in his SOA 88 truck, and my piggy, Bill in his yellow FJ Cruiser, and a few others. Added more guys and trucks on Friday and had ten (twelve at one time after helping some broken trucks). Saturday we were the first group out and had five trucks. Angelo brought his 62 from jersey, Joe Mylie in his 55, Brian OLaughlin in the BJ46, a couple of forties, Don in his 80, a really clean blue 60 (I forget his neat license plate). We hit a lot of rocks,. lots of hills, and lots of mud. In the trees with the breeze blowing regularly the temperature was perfect. Couldn't get any better what with a clear blue sky and all.

Saturday brought me a little trouble. Going through a rock garden on the west property I heard (and felt) a loud crack. Turned out to be my driver side axle twisted off. We rented a tool at the office that allowed us to shove the axle and tire back in and this device held the tire in so I could (slowly) drive out to the staging area. Called my rollback guy and he came and trucked the old girl home.

We had some lunch in the staging area and then headed back into the park. Did a new to me trail ("O") and had some fun when Joe Mylie called to say Dave Crum was dead in the rocks with a broken tie rod in his 40. We headed down there, talked over the situation with Dave and his fellow wheelers, and Bill Smith ended up driving me out the emergency exit onto 209 and home (in air conditioned comfort) to get a tie rod for Dave. This worked out well- in two hours Dave was all back together and driving off the rocks.

The only other carnage I heard of was someone with a blown head gasket, don't know who or what kind of truck.

The BBQ was, as usual, excellent. The raffle was very good- lots of good stuff both small items and valuable stuff. Tom the Polak won the drivers prize, a bumper from Iron Pig. Our buddy (lucky) Chris won a load of items. It worked out quite well, lots of good camaraderie and beer drinking.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Pine Grove and I give it four stars. Clean place, free breakfast, all for a $59.50 nightly discounted (for the event) rate. Joe Mylie, Brian OLaughlin and Don, among others, stayed at the Camp-Awhile off exit 112 and liked it. Lots of complaints again this year about the camp owner (camp Nazi) and I doubt if the event will be stationed at Echo Valley next year. She seemingly could have a gold mine at Echo Valley but her personality and tendency to rip people off is one big turn-off.

I would be remiss in not thanking all the Gotham City guys for a great event. This was year nine for the event (right???)and it's been a great time for me every year. Dave Crum's patience was amazing and I thank him personally for dealing with the camp owner and making the best off what was a potentially bad sitauation. Thanks guys and thanks Dave!!!!!

Did anyone do the new J1 trail? I planned to hit it Saturday but the broken axle prevented me from getting over there.

Got the piggy all ripped apart and was happy to find that I only need to replace the axle bearing and seal along with installing a new axle. I should have all the smaller items Tuesday but am in need of a long (driver side) axle shaft from any year 60 or 62. Anyone have something?

All in all a great event, can't wait till next year. And don't forget the pig run August 8 and 9 at Rausch Creek- I believe most people will be staying at the Camp-Awhile. The ALCA is going to have a small informal cookout Saturday after the days' wheeling is done. Gary S

Nice writeup Gary. It was good to be able to help "you" with a problem for a change. You were finally on the receiving end. Your Carma Credits were starting to overflow. Pictures to follow this evening.

Thanks again for leading the group! A great time was had by all.
I won't be able to make the Pig Run so I'll get the club banner mailed to you this week.

My total carnage: Bud Built Skid/Exhaust damage, rear bumper corner torn off and a rear shock blown out again (that I didn't find until I got home...)

You all have fun at the Pig Run!

Where you jumping again??

I glad all had a great time...Thanks for the good write up Gary...
wish I could have been there...maybe see you at the PIG RUN if all the stars align..

Only the front tires were off the ground Bill, and only by about a foot, The rears stayed firmly planted.
Thanks again guys.
Dave,
(the poo brown 40)

Looks like it was a great event, too bad I had to miss it.

Did the people that stayed at Echo have any issues like in the past, I will be staying there next weekend???

Echo was worse than before. The only plus was the showers were rebuilt. The negatives were the owner and her husband harassing everyone for the entire stay. It was really very frustrating. I won't be staying there again. It may be better if you're not there with a group, but I won't do it again... Twice was enough. Just my 2 centavos.

Was hoping to hear diferently, I will be there with probably 30-40 other trucks for the Northeast TTORA Takeover. Should be interesting I guess, when I was there last month she was a pain, but didn't hang around too much.

I am staying at rausch next year. That place was no great shakes for the $20 I paid for one night. It is nice to hang out with everyone, but the place is a pain in the ass. Rausch is free and very close to the trails.;)

Why did you pay $20?If you stayed in the pavillion area it should have been $15!!!You guy`s have to tell me when stuff like that happens.

By the way Bill,Judy gave me your $10 deposit back and appologized for charging you it.I`ll put it in the mail today.Gotham paid the deposit on the pavillion area and yes we got it back. Thanks to all who did thier part of cleaning up.

Dave, keep it as a donation to the GCLC. I left a note at her office when I left (for once, she was no where to be found) to give it to you. I just didn't want her to keep it.

I got there thursday morning and left friday morning. Some how she said it was a day and a half. I didn't have the energy to argue. All I can tell you is the place is not that great. The people that run it are ass holes and appearantly rip people off. Do people really need a pool and other creature comforts. For the money saved staying at rausch rent a portable shower and call it good. Like I said before, I really wanted to stay at rausch but I also wanted to hang out with the gang. I'm staying at rausch for next year.

I'm not trying to start a mutnany. For me, it just wasn't worth the hastle. I don't mind primative camping and smelling a little bit the next day. (keeps the bugs away) The blue goose water is the same at rausch. I can wake up and hit the trails. This is why I am staying there next year. One mans opinion and resolution.:meh:

Thanks Bill,much appreciated.

To all: We are looking into alternatives. The price we got to bring bath houses to Rausch was astronomical.
David

In years past at GSMTR the STLCA set up an enclosed canopy and had a couple of propane showers. The showers are $100 at Wally World; the only problem is the water source.

Why would you even want to stay at Rausch? All I saw there was dust dust dust. Dust on the tents, dust on the tables. It's a giant dust bowl! You'll be tasting dust for 3 days! Plus there is no shade. Horrible. Place is worst than Echo IMO. But to each their own I guess. :meh:
