My 82 4WD p/u grinds when shifting into 3rd and 4th and the clutch feels too soft sometimes. Also has a funny grinding like noise that goes away when the clutch is used. A friend told is the trans but I suspect the clutch. Any ideas?

Synchros might be out in the trans. Check your clutch fluid level, and look on the inside of the firewall for a leak. Th clutch will manifest itself as bad if you put it in low and drop the hammer in first. If it slips, then your clutch is going, if not, it is likely fine. My guess is the tranny.
