So the clutch disc got moved in the garage and not to sound dumb but I can't remember which side goes up against the flywheel. Any help with that would be great. HJ-60

cheers it will only fit one way. If you try to put it in back to front the bolts that hold the pressure plate onto the flywheel will not reach.

The first picture with 3hu on the clutch shows the back of the clutch, second shows the side that is in contact with the flywheel. Best to change your pilot/spigot bearing in the flywheel as often they are missed and not changed resulting in another pull down.

Clutch thickness

Thanks, kinda figured it might only go in one way but I didn't want to get the engine back from the machine shop and be messing with that. How thick is a new clutch? The FSM tells me the minimun rivet depth and its above that but not by much, I know optimally I would replace the whole assembly but as funds run low I am wondering how much time I can get out of the clutch I've got.

I understand where you are coming from, but its not a 5 minute job to pull the tranny etc again to replace the clutch and have the flywheel milled. Most component makers will not warranty the clutch if the flywheel is not milled. How long it will last depends on your style of driving and the type of country you are driving in etc. I have seen this done before only to have the throw out/clutch release bearing or pilot/spigot bearing start screaming after being disturbed. The plate is less of a problem but by the time it is worn down the springs will let it shudder on take off. Bit of a gamble so good luck either way.cheers

I can understand the money situation but there is not a lot of wear in a clutch.
I dont know the max thickness when new but I doubt the rivet depth is much more than 5mm.
I guess if you have the facilties and the equipment to change the clutch in the future then maybe you can afford to risk it.
If you would have to pay someone it wont be cheap.

The picture above looks like a new or nearly new clutch disk to me. Use that as an example for how much material should be there. If the rivets are flush with the material surface then you're done. It's time for a replacement.
If you want to go cheap, look at the pressure plate (part laying down in the picture) and if it is not scored or badly blued buy only the clutch disk, pilot and throw out bearings and reuse the pressure plate.

Im not sure what you guys pay but the whole kit is only $295 here if you know where to go and the disk is the most expensive bit .
If your going to buy something ,buy the whole lot and be done with it.

Where do you get your parts?

I'm paying almost $600 (Canadian) for the whole kit, more with shipping to the U.S, way more than I was expecting. So after machining, and rebuild (3 yr/36,000 mile warranty) and the rebuild kit I was really just like F@#K that the most expensive clutch ever. Do you have a website or a phone number of a place that would ship to the States?

"Phatwheels" is right on the price for OEM on this side of the big pond.
Have you asked around for clutch "rebuilders". The last time around I had the disk resurfaced and the pressure plate ground and it was under $125.
It's been in the truck for over 100,000kM's and no complaints.

The clutch in the picture had been in my truck for about 3 years [less than 4]. The wear factor on the plate was ok for replacement but the clutch plate was developing a shudder on take off that would have progressively got worse.I put a new unit in when I rebuilt my gearbox. These quality aftermarket clutch kits have a better rating than the standard clutch from Toyota. The replacement was $265.00[kangaroo dollars]. $600.00 Canuckian is unbelieveable even the Safari is not that much, think I was quoted $450.00/$480.00. Surely in the USA a clutch rebuilder could reface the clutch put heavier springs in the clutch plate and pressure plate for less than that price.

I dont use OEM clutches because I dont think they are worth it.
The japanese are not the only ones who know how to make a good clutch;)
The $295 is $256 CAD and are clutches that my brake and clutch shop can dig up.

He says they work fine for everyday use and he also sells the heavy duty for $400.
I think the difference was in the springs,3 vs 5 but I notice BBD clutch has 4
I used one in my FJ73 for 50000 klms and was good when I took it out to do an engine swap. Its now in my friends FJ62 and still going strong.

You could try Don Kyatt but I think freight would make it almost the same as what you are paying.

EDIT Don Kyatt is selling FJ60 clutch kits for $205AUD. I wonder what they are like?:D

Clutch wear

I fortunately found a regular parts store in Canada that can get the clutch for $284 Canadian, they don't ship to the states but we're only 60 miles away. I've got about 1 mm to the rivets. A couple people seem to think the clutch looks really good. It looks like someone might have replaced the disks and the bearings sometime semi-recently. Does 1 mm to the rivets mean I've got much left to it?
