Hi tryng to figure out what my front axle ratio is im running a dana 44. Heres a link of what ive been tring http://www.gmsquarebody.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3860 my problem im having the only time the pinion turns both hubs have to be locked also when it all jacked up i can turn one wheel and the other dosent move at all? that like says if i moves opposite is a different ratio than if there the same direction? when i jack up one side locked hubs one wheel rotation the pinion goes 2 revolutions?

You have to spin your tire a bunch of times to get an accurate guess of your gear ratio. I think it would be easier to pull the cover myself. I doubt you have a 2:1 gear ratio. ( 2 pinion rotations to 1 tire rotation.)

If your tires spin in opposite directions it is "open" and when they spin in the same direction it is likely a locker or a posi.

If it were under the original chevy I would say look and see if the axle tag is still on it but since it has been swapped into the Toy, that is probably long gone. Not sure that it matters but I did it once on an old Ford I had. We jacked up one wheel and I put the t-case in neutral and got under the truck and turned the drive-shaft while a buddy watched the tire.

I chalked a line on the tire and the ground and also on the d-shaft to count the rotations.

As poppa said, if the wheels turn opposite then you have an open carrier and you should be able to jack up one wheel and spin it. An open carrier will send the power to the wheel that is spinning, ie the one that is off the ground.

If you need an accurate measure then you should pull the cover, especially if you are trying to match a 44 front gear to a Toyota Rear since they don't offer all the same ratios for the two different axles and since Toyota offered a 4.10, a 4.30, and a 4.56, being off a quarter turn could be a bad thing.
