what have you guys come up with for the simplest and cheapest winch mount for a 4runner? i plan on buying one soon and want to have my winch mounted on, but i can't afford a cool bumper. it is a superwinch 9.5, no wacky 8274 or anything, so just a standard winch mount. does anyone have any pics of their simple fab jobs? thanks!
Just put a hitch in front and back and mount the winch on a moveable receiver then you can go either in the front or back. You wont have to fab up any bumper and you will have a sweet moveable winch. This is what I would have done if mine didnt come with a spot already for a winch.
If you can weld things decently the winch mount can be very cheap. My friend's 80 had a 12,000 Tabor squeezed in between the front frame rails. The winch mount plate was 5$ in the bargain bin at Flagstaff 4x4, a generic model probably intended for a Jeep. I don't have a closer picture but there are several angle iron pieces burned on that use all of the 80's bumper mounting bolts. The whole assembly can still be easily removed. He is using an ARB now but the cheap mount never failed and drug the 80 uphill through rocks with no problem.
I think the key is proper welding, a skill I do not have. Short of that the hitch mounts are a great idea, they just can't pull at all the crazy angles. I may get the hitch mount on my truck's butt someday.
