Front turn signal rebuild

So after figuring out that I can't get new turnsignals for Miss Piggy, I started to hunt around for a way to rebuild them. My problem was that the threaded rod from the assembly through the collar and into the fender was crunched from trying to get it off. It was also all faded and looked crappy from years of use and weather.

So....here's what I did (I'll post some pics when I get home):

1) disassemble entirely
2) sand the plastic housing and collar with 400 grit
3) prime housing and collar with automobile primer in gray
4) KRYLON makes a dark gray gloss spray paint that matches almost exacly. Paint with that.
5) Purchase a 2-inch, 1/4-inch threaded lamp rod (threaded hollow rod) and screw it into the collar, then into the housing. You have to be gentle here because it is just a bit bigger than the square hole in the collar and the housing.
6) Then I put a lock nut (also in the lamp hardware isle) on there and rebuilt the rest of the unit.
7) I also waxed the lens and chrome-cleaned the frame before I put it back together.
8) The threaded rod is shorter than it used to be, but the lock nuts for the lamps are flat so it shouldn't matter.
9) Also I have not fit it through the fender yet since it's at the body shop, but I anticipate having to make that hole a bit bigger before install.

I am very pleased with the result...so for those of you that are looking for the early front turn signals...this might be a way to save your old ones.

Total cost, about $3.00 in parts and a spritz of spray paint.

I used some PlastX from Meguiars. Not much more effect but it cost more. Actually it was very good on a moderate lense film...less so on heavy weathering.

Have an artist sister working on my dash knobs...will post when the results are in...if ever...ya just can't hurry an "Arteeessst"....might even come to find they have been creatively included in some canvas

I just used crayons :D

Haha, I used white-out and then scraped off the excess when redoing the knobs on my 40 :D

Here is a couple NOT a good ideas. Fresh from the backwoods. Things I found on the Pig. And one good one. 1) remove old pilot bearing using a chisel, replace with non-sealed type bearing (hell of a time dealing with that one.) 2) and pretty much completely insane, replace the fuel return hose that runs between the fuel tank and the fueling inlet with not automotive water hose but even worse, yep you guessed it, lawn quality water hose. The last a good one (I likes it) weld some tabs on a chunk of steel and replace that cheesy stock rear door lever on the ol 55. Rusty so it fits right in and pretty much indestructible.
