G'day All,
I thought it would be nice to have a thread where clever ideas (using Toyota parts from other vehicles, newer vehicles or after-market) could be posted up. I had in mind modifications which can be done pretty easily in a day or two, and which improve the use-ability of your Cruiser.
I thought I would start: While this mod only really works on 81-84 40 series with the door-actuated dome light, I thought that with all the new Aussie-spec Cruisers going to the Up Above, it may become more useful.
The first thing I did was to put another factory dome light on the passenger's side (there is a blanking plug there now, so all you have to do is remove that and replace it with a dome light, then run a wire from the driver's side dome light). This made the cab much brighter at night.
Next, I got a pin switch from the front door of a wrecked 81-84 40 series (you can get this from the dealer as well), and drilled a small hole in verticle pilar on the tub behind the right door, just below where the wire to the licence plate light comes out. I positioned the pin switch so that it was compressed when the rear door was closed, but released when the door was open. Finally, I ran the wire to the front door pin switch, so when any of the three doors open, the dome lights comes on- no more groping around in the dark when I open the rear door at night.
Cheers,
Josh
