In preparing last minute items for our trip my older son (12) asked how they were going to sleep in the cruiser, other son is 7. Well there won't be much need to sleep as it's not a camping trip. But to make it fun in our first real adventure in the 80 I had a pallet revelation. My wife is on the pallet kick and we just did our back splash with the boards (shameless non 80 pic attached). I happened to have leftovers of one I had cut up and took a measurement, exactly 48" wide. Perfect. Cut it to length of 41".
It won't need to hold much weight, and even the weight it will have will be spread out but it's pretty solid. I went with the 90 deg alluminum pieces to add some clearance rather than using 2x4s, also saved some weight. Those two pieces and the peg board are all I purchased. $30. Everything else is from the pallet. Luckily it happened to have a ice big piece for the legs, 4x3 I believe. I just added some pieces to raise it up more. It's fairly light still as I think the pallet boards are pine, very light. I can easily get it in and out by myself. 12" of clearance underneath.
Nice set up for almost no cost. And now you have double the space!
I never thought of raising the back of the rear seat. I'm gonna have to do that, since I already have two drawers in the back that are a bit higher than the seat.
What is up under the roof? Is that metal or a net?
Ah yes that's what I thought. Saw one of those threads too and was going to copy the idea but couldn't find a suitable solution for parts. I recently ordered a zippered mesh roof (T-top) bag for boats to put up there, but don't have it yet.
I mostly need it for bulky things like towels, a change of clothes, light jacket, etc.
