So, just redid the centre arm and all the tie rods, put it all together fairly greased up, and tightened (the centre arm) as per the factory manual, it seems to get loose the first few times I've driven it though - is this normal and just due to the grease squeezing out and the thing 'working itself in'? Also - if I still see some slop there, I gather that it is likely because the actual bracket is goobered - where is the best place in or near the lower mainland to get a replacement? SOR price is about 100, toyota wanted ~180? (the gearbox still holds oil and doesn't seem to have any slop, the draglink where the pitman arm comes in is still within adjustment range and is adjusted properly, I think the only places left I could get clop coming in are the centre arm and the rag joint?)

Thanks!
Evan

my guess is a 40 series, manual steering. But sorry Evan, I dont know jack about fixing them (properly that is).

You might want to post your questions in the appropriate tech forum for faster results. us westcoasters are a slow lot.

oops.. bit stupid on my part... 83 BJ42, manual steering. I'm talking about the cone shaped bracket / bushing thingy that attaches to the drag link, the steering dampener and the relay rod. Known in the toyota service manual as the Centre arm and centre arm bracket, I've also seen them referred to as the sector arm? (I think).

Pretty sure mine is hooped, shows all the signs of being bad (the centre arm moves out of plane instead of nicely just rotating on the shaft, steering has a bit of 'lag' in it), and since I just replaced the guts, I'm pretty sure the housing is bad.

Posted here a bit because I was hoping for some local know-how of where I might find a replacement, though I might just bite is and go OEM.

Evan, try Steve at Extreme Bends in Coquitlam. He has lots of 'Cruiser parts and know how.
