I can't catch a break! The front drive shaft that I ordered used from the local Toyota dealership came in and was damaged (the threaded hole where one of the bolts go was damaged from the torch the removed it). Told the dealership that I'd just prefer to go to a junkyard myself to hand select a used DS, then asked for a credit and they said they wouldn't give me a credit till they were sure that they would get one! WTF has gotten into people these days?

Anybody got any ideas where I can find a deal on the front drive shaft for a 1992?

Did you pay cash or with a CC?
if with the latter call the CC company and dispute it don't wait and get it on record .
As for a price thats seems very high for a used one . Plus I thought dealers didnt sell used parts :hhmm:

So are you suggesting that he "open up the diff" (your exact words) as in removing the 3rd member? or, are you saying open the diff fill plug and look in? or, are you saying open the diff drain plug, drain the diff fluid, and inspect?

We can't read your mind (or at least I can't read your mind) and when you say "open up the diff" then it is reasonable to ask you to elaborate on what you are recommending and why.

This is what I would do:
- put the thing on stands, futz around with the wheels, rotate them, listen for noise and binding, infer if there are axleshafts in there (hopefully!)
- open the pumpkin fill plug, look and see in there. Check if there is oil, look at the hardware, see if everything looks there and normal.
- open the drain plug, drain some oil, check for chips
- if I'm concerned, feeling unlucky or bored, remove the 3rd, and check that
- if something is really wrong, actually open up the diff (the real one now)
- if the oil looked old or contaminated, change it
- practice my mind reading skills, never know when they can come in handy... :D

Today I FINALLY got the right DS after 3 tries from the dealership. I installed the used DS, disengaged cent. diff, and it's driving ok but once I hit 55mph there is a slight vibration in the front. How do I diagnose if it's the front diff, drive shaft u-joints, or transfer case? The best way to describe the vibration would be to say that it drives like I have VERY aggressive mud tires.

Did you check if DS was straight before you installed?

you've put it in in the correct phase direction, right? otherwise there is a chance of vibrations

Much more complete discussions out there on that topic.

New, there is the back and forth (slip yoke forward or not) direction issue but also the phase issue (U joints aligned or not etc). The latter comes into play if you disassemble the DS, but even if you didn't do that yourself, it could have been done before you got the DS especially if it's used. BTW, if you have the DS off, it may be a good time to take the slip yoke end off and clean and lube things inside. But of course, mark things before you disassemble.

And of course you could have the used DS checked for balance.
