Why is the CDN M101 referred to as 1/4 ton? It weighs 775lbs and has a payload recommended capacity of 1300lbs? 500lbs is 1/4 ton?

Just wondering why?

Roberto

I thought it was the rating of the vehicle towing it (jeep)? I could be way off though, great question.

1/4 ton is the military "off-road" or "cross-country" rating.................a whole lot more conservative than the road rating. I believe the US trailers are supposed to be capable of floating with that load in them, could be a myth tough. :)

You might want to check your information, because that 1,300 pounds might be the combined weight of the trailer and payload.

Yeah I was informed that the payload is 500lbs (1/4 ton) and the weight of the trailer is 775lbs with combined weight of 1275lbs!

directly from the M416 manual, chapter 1, page 1-6
"1-6. EQUIPMENT CHARACTERISTICS, CAPABILITIES, AND FEATURES.
a. Characteristics.
(1) Watertight body will float the trailer and payload during fording."

The stated payload rating is 500# both 'highway' and 'cross country' on both the M416 & M101CDN2. The onroad rating is the same as the offroad, but as stated conversative. I've had close to a ton in dirt in my trailer on the road. The trailer handled, but not something I'd suggest for every outing.

The top dat plate is for a M416B1 and the lower is for a M416. It is hard to read the lower data plate, but the numbers are the same for both trailers if you look closely.

The M416 list 2 payload ratings, one for cross country (500 lb) and one for highway (750 lb). I have heard stories of how much these trailers can really carry. So, I'm not surprised that your trailer handled that load.

 Very cool, four guys and their gear are well over 500# too. I do not think that was the spec (floating) for the M101 Canadian though.:frown:

As I don't have the trailer in front of me, but IIRC the M101CDN has 2 or 4 drainholes in the outer corners. It doesn't have the drain plugs like its US counterparts.

Thanks! It just seems like with 9 leafs on each side and a 3500lb axle that it can handle(and evidentally does) alot more but not recommended?
