Yea, you should be able to jumper it off the battery to check for basic operation. Don't try to transmit without an antenna attached though! The magnetic antenna will be your best bet for a basic check.

AFAIK, there aren't many "rules of the road" for CB radio ... ch 9 is reserved for emergency use, but other then that you should be fine. If you're near the interstates you should pick stuff up with a little scanning. Away from there ... not so much.

Get near interstate on channel 19 and ask for a radio check. one of the truckers should to answer you back. All antennas have to be tuned with an SWR meter, but they will work without it, just your range will be limited. Anything will be good enough for what we're doing. I might be interested in taking one of those radios off your hands. I need one for my new cruiser. If you have room, bring them all. :)

You need to tune your antenna with an swr meter like luke said, but it just isn't the range that is suffering. From the material I was reading on when I installed mine it said that your swr reading had to be below 2 and as close together as you could get it or the life of your radio would suffer. I use a firestick antenna on mine but I also have a magnetic wilson one too. the wilson one I put on and checked with swr and it was perfect without any tuning. the firestick i like better but it took about an hour to tune. I have an swr meter if you need to borrow one. good luck

If anyone has a swr and is coming to the trail ride sunday could you bring it along? I got the lil will magnet antenna but haven't calibrated it yet.

Thanks,

You have some good parts. Now you just need the pieces in the middle to connect it all together.

Bring your stuff by the monthly meeting and we can tune your antenna. I have a VSWR meter and will bring it along at any of the functions.
