I have searched and read extensively, but still not clear on the right set-up for my intended use.

My application will be for driving logging road in mountainous areas using the CB to avoid loaded 18s. Plus, the usual highway use will be secondary.

I like the smallness of this cheapo Radio Shack unit: 40-Channel Mini Mobile CB - RadioShack.com

But don't really know what quality/features I will need for my application.

And then for the install, I understand how to power a CB, but not sure the best location for the antenna (front or back) or how to run the cable.

It costs a bit more but you might want to look at a Cobra 75WXST. On my 4Runner I have the gray box mounted behind the dash and just disconnect the handset when I am not using it...no big box to find an out of the way place to mount.

Check your logging road to see what frequencies they use. All of our use 2 meter commercial frequencies, vary few use CB's because of the extremely limited range in the mountains.

I'm using the Cobra 75WXST as well and have been vary happy with it... as for the antenna, the top center of a metal roof is best but anywhere you can mount it on or beside a large metal surface will work well. Once you know where you wont mount the antenna and the radio wiring is easy... only thing to consider with the antenna cable is to keep it a way from RF sensitive systems in your truck (ECU, ABS, Airbag controllers) if possible... 5 watt CB shouldn't cause any problems but most owners manuals have instructions...

Before you buy a radio, look at Sparkys CB Shack, in ILL. They have some good prices, and selection of radios. All come tuned and alaigned free of charge. They could advise a good system. HTH, Al

If you have one of those dash carpet covers you can double sided tape the unit to top of dash in center. Dash cover hides wiring, with roof mount take coax to left pillar and up behind molding.

I have that radio and it works fine for trail comm. If you want to scan looking for "good buddies" you will need a different radio, if you are just using it to stay in touch with a group on a single channel it will work as well as any other radio. Everyone I know who has the Cobra 75WXST has problems with the keypad being to small.

I use 3M command strips for mounting since I rarely us CB, once you use 2M you just do not want to screw with CB. A mag mount antenna centered on the roof works for me, for a permanent mount try to get the antenna as high on the truck as possible and if you can get it in the center of the roof.

8 years ago when I first installed a CB I followed the wealth of info on the above firestik site. I continue to be amazed at how much performance I get out of my $35 Uniden CB with it set up correctly. It's all in the install.
