Yep, you won't get anything good with it in the garage. If it's on your bumper, make sure your hood is down also - guess how I know?

Take a multimeter and check to see that the cable is not shorted. Disconnect the antenna the base loading coil and check from the center conductor to the shield. it should read > 1000 ohms. Depending on the style of antenna depends on what the reading will be with the antenna hooked up. Try another antenna that you know is good and see what it reads. Don't keep the mile keyed very long if it shows max return of signal (you will blow the filan amplifier).

When your antenna is hooked to the coax wire properly you should be able to measure low resistance (< 1 ohm) from the shield to the body of the truck (if you have a body or bumper mounted antenna or the magnet if a magnet mounted antenna) The center of the coax should read low resistance to the mast of the antenna (fiberglass masts won't be able to get a reading unless you take off the top cap and read from the metal adjustment screw). I have a cheap mag mount and I read <1 ohm from the metal mast to the coax center conductor, < 1 ohm from the coax shield to the magnet and > 2 million ohms from the center to the shield. It works great.

As for the cruiser it is an unfinished work that I bought. It has a 350 crate engine, turbo 400 transmission and NP208 transfer. it is missing brake lines and drive shafts.

If you have a bumper mount antenna you have to strip back the shield and crimp it in a large lug to fit under the antenna mounting nut. THe center conductor has a smaller lug crimped on and goes to the center screw of the antenna. Then wrap the end of the coax to prevent water (corrrosion) from entering the coax and the connections.
