I picked up my first CB, an old Uniden Grant XL, and I need an antenna. I'd like to mount it on the roof rack with a spring and quick disconnect. Suggestions for length?

Would a longer bumper mounted (better protection) antenna provide the same reception?

The Firestik website has some excellent tech information. I just set up a radio and at first my antenna was mounted to the rear stock bumper of my 4Runner and the interference of it being next to the body made the SWR and therefore the reception TERRIBLE

Tech-Docs Index

Instead of got it slightly jerry rigged to the factory spoiler with a mount designed for big truck mirrors plus a good ground and the SWR was instantly at 1.1 and I haven't even tuned it yet. That's temporary until I build a custom bumper with krzyabncanuck and mount it to one of the swing outs.

Keep in mind that whip antennas are not allowed at many events. I'd go with a Firestick, there are better performing antennas out there but for the cost FS is a decent product.
