Nice set-up with the 80 and the tent. I'd like to cruise over one day and check it out.

About the 25 gallon aux. tank - it's one of the older MAF Aussie tanks - originally installed in the truck in 1997. It has a fuel cut-off at the filler neck, inside the standard fill hatch. It is wired so the dash switch also switches the fuel sensor input to the fuel gauge. I can go for about 750 to 900 miles on one HUGE fill-up.

Pasquale

The Columbus medium and small are the only AutoHome tents currently built in Carbon Fiber. I do think that a Carbon Maggiolina would be a really awesome addition to the line.

Very Nice.
Is it the toyota sub tank switch?
I would like to see some pics!

I can get 500 Miles with the 13.2 gallon aux. I would have liked a 22 gallon to hang no lower than the frame. This stock one sits way up there with nuch room to spare.

I have been waiting for a sunny day to get some pictures, and to remove the welfare tires and replace with Revos. That is now done, smog done, registration next week. I think the subtank switch is standard Toyota - fits in the dash and looks right.

Lots of stuff to change on this truck - ARB air compressor is toast and coming off. Looking to add high capacity 12V unit and manifold on teh firewall. Getting rid of airhorns and OBA tank (in the way of the Hanna sliders I have on order), New Optima Yellow Top going in, Smittybilt tube steps coming off, drawer system mounting being finalized for the rear. Got some changes to make on the Hella 4000s. Then new brake pads, bearing repack, lube, set up the wiring for the trailer, and super clean the rig and go cruisin'.

Then I can disassemble the trailer, paint desert dune color and Line-X the box and fenders, new 16" wheels and tires, reassemble... Don't know when I am going to get to the flat fender (CJ2A) that has been waiting for several years. Would like to paint to match the cruiser when I shoot the trailer box. That's a whole different project.

Pasquale: I really liked the photos on your website. The Taco on the beach at sunset, especially excellent.

Chris,

Did you ever have a roof rack up there? If so, do you miss being able to store items on top now that the tent takes up the enitre roof?

I do not miss it. Once I got the extra gas under the truck instead of on the roof. I never liked the roof rack I had it because I needed it. I tried the trailer
but was not crazy about taking it every where i wanted to go.

I was looking hard at the Howling Moon. With a roof rack but after all of the research and laying out where I wanted what I decided against it and went with the lighter, more aerodynamic, and more expensive hard shell.
It will be used very often and for me it was the clear choice.

I had way more pluses on this set up than any of the others I looked into.

Help me out here according to my calculations which definately could be off, but to get 900 miles out of one HUGE fill-up your rig would have to average about 18 miles to the gallon..................

Oh and that tent is bad ass but to pricey for my blood.

I can do the math, too. The main factors are speed and drag. I drove the truck home from so. Seattle down I5 to I80 to 680 to Palo Alto, CA on one fill up, which was about 750 miles, IIRC, and I had some fuel remaining. Averaged about 65 MPH. There was no roof rack and no tent on top. Tires were at 40 PSI cold. Mileage is not as good as my 60, but the Alpine stereo is much better.

I have no idea yet what the precise MPG on this truck is. But I am guessing it's about 14- 15 when not in a hurry. With some fine tuning and driving slower than the speed limit, it could do better, I believe.

I just topped it off, and the sub-tank took just over 26 gallons. The main tank still had some fuel, and took only 13 gallons. I think the main tank holds 25 gallons??

I am heading to LA tomorrow so I will see what I can do on that trip.

Chris - what tires are you running on your 80?

M

The 35" Goodyear MTR's on stock rims. I am heading south tomorrow also. Going to Baja for 2 weeks :) Hope to get out of this rain and some nice 90 degree temps for a change! And some yellowtail!!!

Have a great trip, Chris, and post some pictures when you get back. Going to East Cape? Loreto?

Hey Mike,

Heading south also tomorrow. I am running the 35" Goodyear MTR's on stock rims.
I am off to Baja for 2 weeks!! Can not wait to get out of the rain and get some 90 degree weather on the beach :) Hope to get some nice yellowtails also!!!

25 X 2 = 50 gallons X 10 MPG = ? perhaps :)

It wasn't the 500 I was questioning it was the 900.:D

If so then you averaged better than 15 mpg. Sorry Mike wasn't questioning your ability to do math it just seemed rather optimistic IMO.

Correct on the main with a .something.

Please report back I will be curious to see what mpg you obtain. The only reason I qustioned the 900 was that I roll with roughly 70 gallons fully loaded and the best I have ever obtained was a 950 miles on one tank with an average mpg of 13.6 and that was kicking ass I thought.:D Course I was running cross country and although I was no where loaded down to the point I sometimes am I was averaging between 70 - 80 mph.

cpg and I already calculated based on the fuel savings that it would take him about 120,000 miles to makeup the difference he saves with the carbon fiber aerodynamic tent versus a square faced tent or roofrack up there. ;)
