I have a 1984 4Runner with a 22R and Carb. I am having an issue with the carb. When starting cold, it goes to a normal high idle. The problem is, after it is warm, I cannot get it to come off of the high idle. I was playing a bit with it this morning, and I moved the choke linkage on the back of the carb, and the engine idled down to normal, around 800 RPM. As soon as I touch the accelerator and then let off, it goes right back to high idle. Does anybody know what might be wrong? Thanks.

stupid carb

I had the same issue with my 82 22r and I noticed the the idle adjustment screw was kinda loose and would move every time i hit the throttle. I some how lost the screw when I was trying to shim it with washers and could not find one with the same thread pattern so I used a smaller bolt of similar length and positioned nuts on either side of the arm so it cannot move. What a pain in the ass! I researched and looked at the vaccuum system forever and replaced a bunch of crap before I realized the issue. Hope this helps...if not...good luck.

did you open the throttle in the truck, or right there on the carb?

i suggest you verify proper operation of the linkage, and springs. also clean off the linkage with wd40, and get er all lubed up.

you can use a vacuum gauge to check for leaks. this tool is very versitale, and can tell you a lot of important information

reckon its the heat riser?

Not installed (tube from exhaust manni to diafram, is it a dashpot?) properly so it can tell when to cut the choke off?
