20r with 32's actually runs good with plenty of power thanks to the 4.36s or 4.37s whatever the right number is. The thing would barely run so I swapped out the carbs and it ran perfectly. I was getting 17mpg and then all of a sudden my problem with the truck stalling when you initially throttled into it wiether you be taking off or shifting gears campe back. I have a 4-7psi electric pump so I put a regulator on it thinking I was pushing past the seat and it does seem to have taken care of the falling on its face part but no luck on the mpg maybe got me to 10 mpg. The only sign I have right now is when you are at a constant throttle and the truck is not trying to speed up or slow down it surges or bucks or ??
Is it common for fuel to get pushed past and run down into the intake or something?? I would think it would smoke black or ??
The reg is the standard one you always see at the parts house that is chrome and doesnt have a guage but is a large dial maybe the size of a 50 cent piece.
Idle solonoid. I will try and check into that asap
Brakes sticking I will jack it up tomorrow after work and see
Front bearings YES they were I will double check tomorrow thanks for the thoughts!!!
Ok the brakes and wheel bearings are perfect. The plugs are black not like I would think but still black it is for sure rich. I pulled the diaphram accelerator pump the one that is on the side of the carb with the three screws and found that it was dripping out the end of tube with the hose removed. When i got it out it didnt have a hole it had many many holes. I replaced it with a used one out of another carb I had for now and also double checked top dead center and my timing and I have it a bit advanced maybe 10 degrees and the vacuum advance is working still.
I am really hoping it is the diaphram. I saw on a google search where a person claimed theirs were bad and they were only getting 87 khm on a tank. I am getting 100 miles so it sounds similar and mine was in deed bad???????
I replaced the pump on the side of the carb and it definately took some of the stumble out as well as got it back up to 11.5 mpg but I still have some kind of problem. I went ahead and ordered a rebuild kit for the 20r carb. I know the carbs suck but I just need to get back to 17 mpg and get back to scouting as well as through hunting season so it hopefully will do the trick and then I will swap in the 4.3 the other crappy part is my throttle cable decided to fray and is sticking bad so I had to order a lokar universal that I hope I can make work on the factory linkage for now since it will be used later when the motor swap happens
I wanted to dig this up for the future people that run acrossed it and hopefully learn from my stupidity. I am doing a motor swap and pulled the valve cover off out of curiosity and sure enough the motor is a tooth off. I knew I was having trouble getting the timing mark to line up where it was suppose to while I was timing it but I had so many mixed and matched parts I told myself it had to be right as it ran perfectly and had plenty of power for a 20r. Don't rule the cam timing out if you are fighting unaswerable MPG problems regardless of how good you think it runs.
I am currently going thru this myself on an 82 22r with an aisin. P/O replaced original aisin with a crappy rebuild and then let it set for 6 years.....I am almost there now. It runs after cranking it for 15-20 seconds and pumping it. (choke issues i know)
