I'm in the process of rebuilding the carb on my 1985 FJ60.....and have taken apart the carb and somewhat surprised to find that there were no gaskets behind the upper part of the carb and the phenolic spacer and also between the phenolic spacer and the lower throttle body portion! Do i have that right? There appears to be gaskets for this in the rebuild kit that I bought, apparently someone rebuilt this previously and put it together with no gaskets between the upper and lower portion of the carb. No wonder I couldn't get it to run very well.

Yes, there are normally, beige bonded gaskets on that insulator/spacer. Maybe they tore and someone sanded them off? Use the ones in the kit. Don't use any RTV - it's not fuel resistant. Only bonding material that is fuel resistant is Permatex Motoseal
