I am really sick and tired of my "environmentally friendly" C.A.R.B jerry can's dispensing mechanism. Holding the can upside down with 50 pounds of stinky smelly gasoline in it with one hand and arm while f***ing around trying to get its tiny little short tank spout adapter into my Tacoma's recessed gas filler and then having to monkey around with that silly-a$$ valve and safety latch with the other hand is a real PITA.

Environmentally friendly? :bounce2: I don't think so. Almost as much gas leaks out the valve as actually gets into the truck tank. Sure would be nice if somebody could come up with some kind of adapter that could replace that ":censor:" dispensing mechanism so that it doesn't require three hands to hold the can, squeeze the valve, and hold the valve's safety latch open all at the same time. Anybody know of such an animal?

Be cautious of which cans you haul gasoline in that are in plain site while driving in SoCal. Recently, the CHP was stopping people leaving a motorcycle race and issued tickets to those that had gas in non-carb compliant containers!

Complete BS...

On some cans, you can find a 49 state version of the can you have and retrofit the non-carb fittings.

Just an idea.

CARB cans suck, but you can use a super siphon to empty the cans. It's much easier than transferring fuel with the supplied nozzle. I don't even move the cans to empty them; I just run the siphon from the cans to the tank.

CARB - California Air Resources Board

Non CARB - 49 other states in the USA that don't require gas cans to meet carb standards and have similar gas cans with out the carb BS.

OK, I thought the non-CARB cans were unavailable in all states now. I can't find one in Colorado, and I didn't look in Utah or Nevada (just returned from an off-road vacation there a few days ago - didn't think to look for one).

I did find some battery-operated pumps but the reviews did not lead me to believe they were of much use. Either they work a couple times and then die, or the output tube is too big and won't fit into the vehicle's filler tube, or the pump will not supply enough pressure to push the fluid more than a couple inches above the top of the pump...

I'll google around a bit. Thanks for clarification. May hafta go to some garage sales.

Maybe more states are going to CARB style gas cans now, but a couple pf months ago you could buy non carb ans in Nevada still.

CARB fuel cans have been foisted on us all.

I like my old gas cans that are date stamped back in the '40s.:D

Super siphon are the way to go. I put a different hose on mine. Made it much longer.

Won't work if the level of the liquid to be siphoned is lower than the output end of the siphon hose (i.e. you can't siphon from a gas can that is on the ground because the bottom of the fuel tank is what? - 18 inches above the ground?? Please correct me if I'm wrong...

Are you dragging the can along the ground? No, it's in/on the truck. Leave it in the truck and run the siphon from the can to the gas tank. Give it 3 or 4 minutes and it's done.

I interviewed for a job once at the division that does testing for such devices, having had lots of real-life experience trying to actually use some of them... I think I was a little too honest in my views.

Spotcruiser,

If I were driving an open pickup then by all means those little super siphons would be the way to go. But due to lack of funds (retired) I have to compromise and make do, so I put a topper over the bed and that's where I store all my s**t (uuh, "gear"), and sleep.

It's also where I carry two gas canisters. Yes, I know it's not the best way to go, but it's all I have. Can't carry them in holders on the tailgate or back bumper 'cause then the tailgate won't come down. Don't want to rack them on top because lots of places I go have low-hanging branches. So because the chances of having to use them are minimal, I shove 'em up there between the wheel wells and the front of the bed. If I have to use them, I remove them completely from the truck so that should I spill some gas it won't get inside the topper (because if it does it means a quick trip home).

You know, as I write this, it's only the CARB can that's a problem. Thanks to Spotcruiser's post I got to thinkin'. I suppose I could simply place the CARB can on the ground a few feet away from the truck, loosen the cap, let the can vent, place it on the open tailgate, remove the cap completely and then use the super siphon. Yes, I think that's probably the best solution.

The only fly in that ointment is how to store the siphon after using it so that the left-over fumes in it won't stench up my gear.

Surfpig,

Been there, done that. Funny when you tell management something they don't want to hear, it's you who has the bad attitude.

Anybody,

What do I have to do to get the smilies to work in the Advanced mode? Can't select the from the sidebar and nothing works in the formatting bar above the message area...

Exactly! Just drain the hose well and tie it up in the engine compartment or under the spare tire somewhere. Or double-bag it in a ziplock or something similar.

Learned some time ago to just whip the Super Siphon in a circle over your head a few times and the centrifugal force will remove most liquid residue and leave very minimal smell.

I drain as much gas as I can back into the can or tank - then put the hose in one of my mesh external Trasharoo pockets.

the small CARB tank I have for the mower, or when the wife runs out of gas, is a piece of junk. the spout never really worked right. I end up taking it off to pour gas in the mower. however, my 5 gallon CARB compliant can for the quad actually works pretty well. it is a total different animal though, and wouldn't work for vehicles, as it is made to fit the filler hole off dirt bikes and quads.

I can't agree with OP more. We just spent 6 days without power due to a storm. I have two generators. I have two old non CARB cans and one new CARB can, which I bought after the storm. The CARB can is dangerous. I spilled as much fuel as I got in my generators with it, most on my running shoes. The CARB can is really ridiculous!

This works very, very well. 24hrsofnevada taught me that trick. I store mine coiled up in a 1gal zip lock bag, which I store inside of an air tight ammo can, which further stops chance of gas fumes inside.

If I need to use a spout I have some old style spouts, they screw right on the Blitz carb style cans.

another not too expensive option is the oldschool metal army issue gas cans or their new polymer counterpart- both have a huge lid opening and one can buy a funnel to screw onto it in place of the cap if you want. dont quote me on this but i believe that cheaperthandirt and lowrangeoffroad sell them but dont quote me on that.
