Hi all,
I am a newb and considering purchasing a 1972 fj55.
The good:
runs well

the rest:
lots of rust (or it seems to me)
interior looks trashed, dash and headliner and all window seals are dried up or gone.

I can post more details but do not know what is relevant. Here is a link to some pics. Mostly I want to know what it would take to save the body. I do not know much about rusted and body work.

Thanks!

Bob,
thanks. Floors are surface rusted but not all the way through anywhere. The body has at least three coats of paint, but was originally red and white. The rear corners are not rusted heavily, but one has a good dent. I thought one of those pics was of the body mounts underneath. If it is not a mount, what is that a pic of? That is the worst one. The others are maybe half as bad. Sorry was rushed and did not have time for more pics.

I must say that after hearing the story of it sitting there for a few years with gas in it, I was surprised to see it start up and run like a top. It did sputter after ignition was shut off.

He was asking1800 but we have not started negotiating or anything. What got me was just that there is really no part of the vehicle that does not seem to need attention to bodywork. KNowing nothing about rust and body work it seems overwhelming.

Not any worse than some on here have started with. Hood is incorrect for the year but would be necessary in a 2F has been swapped in and stock air cleaner retained. Most of the rust holes are usual and pretty straightforward fixes. Even body mounts, if necessary, are being reproduced. I'd be most worred about the rear roof corners. That's two-layer territory and no fun and all fab work unless you can transplant a good roof. Even then, it's a lot of work. IMO, any running Pig is worth at least a grand, even with this sort of body damage. With a running engine, you could part it out for that.

cruxarche, Any work on a vehicle that old seems overwhelming. Its a personal commitment that you need to decide whether or not to take on, If the floors and body-mounts are in that good of shape and the PIG runs that good (did you drive it) $1800 is a Pretty good deal. Its a project like it is with all of us. Its your decision but you are definately in the right place for input. Whats your local?

Thanks Bob.

Bob,
I am in norcal, Sac area. I think i will probably pass on this due to the extensive body work. My comfort is in suspensions and am confident I can adapt my general auto skills to handle the needs of the brakes and fuel systems etc. I may look for a different project. But, I have always wanted one of these...

Bob,
I definitely will. The guy is headed out of town for a little while which gives me some time to think! Also, maybe some time to figure out what it will take to do the body work $$$.

ok. I went for a 60. Just don't have what it takes right now to pull off a 55. So I guess I will be heading over to that section of the forum! THANKS for your replies. If anyone is actually interested in the pig, check the SF Bay craigslist a few days ago. Posted as fj55 and for 1850. I actually met the guy so if you want any more info about the history or condition feel free to pm me.

Bob:
Its an 85 (October) with four speed and 185k miles. Stock I think, unless you consider a heavy undercoat of oil a mod! It drove home fine about 75 miles with no issues. Solid on the highway and no real rust anywhere to be found. It was pouring rain and I do have two soaked floorboards! So it begins...

I posted over in the fj60 area as Newb with "85 90.
