Can I safely run 87 octane on my 04?

I owned a 2006 for about 4 years and 87 was the only octane that was ever put in it during that time. (About 60k mi.)
Octane refers to the rate of how fast a mixture of fuel/air will burn. Low octane will burn quick, where higher octane will burn slower allowing more advanced timing for greater power. If using lower octane and you experience engine knock, you'll need to retard the ignition timing unless the engine has a brain to sense it and do it automatically.
I've ran nothing but 87 in my VVTI 2007 GX for the past 5 years and about 60,000 miles. I ran 91 in it when I bought it in 2020 and gas was cheap. Once prices spiked I went down to 87. No noticeable difference in power or MPG. I did put a 87 octane tune on the rig in 2023, which gave it quite a bit more power, but it still had 2 years before that of running 87 with the OEM tune. I've also towed our camper at least 10,000 miles with this setup, both with and without the tune.
The GX has an advanced ECU that can accommodate lower-octane fuel. The same engine was used in the Tundra/Sequoia with a similar (if not higher) power rating and 87 octane spec'd.

According to Google the manual says 87 is minimum octane. They “recommend” premium but mostly for towing and “high performance driving”. Definitely on 05-09 I’d use premium. I’ve been using premium in mine since I got it last year but since I don’t have to anymore, woohah, more money for upgrades!
In my 05, I generally only use premium when towing our camping trailer.
Same here, I usually fill with 87 and only get higher octane when I tow. Engine management has knock sensors so it won't destroy the engine.
whats the compression ratio on this engine? just curious.
Per the service manual, compression pressure is from 149 to 199 psi, with cylinder delta of no more than 14 psi.
Ratio is supposedly 9.6 to 1.
