Why doesn't anybody rebuild calipers. Unless they're really corroded, seems like "O" rings ond seals are the only things to wear out? All the posts I read involve swapping in reman.
Ed????

I'm also tempted to rebuild a pair, but a set of factory seals is about $21 per side and a rebuilt caliper is $54 at Kragen's (prices for '92 4Runner calipers which is what I use). Then the bought ones always look a bunch cleaner...

local brake shop will rebuild mine for $30ish or I can get a set of loaded(pad included)f from them for $35 each ;) Very happy with the re-man calipers I have gotten from these guys, I wanna say they were Auto Specialites brand.

the local Toyota dealer like to rebuild the ones they do(like an 80 series)

OK, I'm sold on the reman, but do I just order the ones for a '76(November) so maybe a '77 axle, or is there something better that will fit? Are they all 4 piston, or 2? I just want to know what to ask for.
Bill, the power steering is the best mod I've done, and it was simple thanks to you.
'Course I haven't done the disc brakes yet.
Ed

Just buy the new ones from TLC. They're only like $400 each and are very bling!!

The parts mgr at my favorite toyota dealership said he would deduct the cost of the rebuild kit from the price of the calipers if the rebuild kit didnt work. I tried the kit. It didnt work, but it was worth a shot.

If you are buying reman units anyway, ask for '92 4Runner calipers, you get bigger brake pads and 4 bigger pistons. Grind the backing plate a bit and it should bolt up:

Let's see if this image will show better directly linked:

Dave, thanks for the caliper info. I also want to do the S-10 Master cylinder conversion posted by Spaceghost. It is non-boosted, which is what I want, but How would I find out if it is large enough?
Thanks again.
Ed

I'm using a 15/16" bore master ( 82-86 Supra) and it is plenty. If the S-10 master is larger than that, it should be good. If the pedal gets too heavy w/o booster, try attaching the booster rod higher, closer to the pivot on the brake pedal, as long as the pedal travel is still OK.

Dave, are you using the 15/16 supra cylinder unboosted? I'm considering that one, and I'm doing the monte carlos rears, too. Booster clearance is a problem with my '66, so I'd like to go manual.
Thanks

No, I am using mine boosted. The only concern I have with using a Supra MC without a booster is the master cylinder push rod (that you'll have to fashion from your old master or a Toyota booster to hook up to the pedal) since it has no retaining mechanism to keep it from falling out other than the brake pedal travel limiter.

If you are mounting it directly to the firewall, your options is almost limitless. I don't know, but some unboosted US vehicles may already have an integral rod that can mount to the cruiser pedal. Visit your friendly neighborhood parts store and root around in their shelves :)
